| How to suppress "Wireless network found" notice? I have a Toshiba Portégé M200 tablet PC with a built-in wireless adapter. Each time I start the machine it gives a loud BEEP (although I have set Windows to be silent) and opens a message box that says, "Wireless network found / Click to connect to a wireless network." Thank you, computer. That is one of my neighbors' networks. I shouldn't be using it, it wouldn't let me if I tried, and you are plugged into my ethernet hub, so I don't need it in any case. I close the box and continue my work. A few minutes later the computer BEEPs and displays the message again. Thank you, computer. You do not need to do that any more. I close the box and continue my work. A few minutes later the computer BEEPs and displays the message again. Is there anyway I can turn this notification off? I have looked in the Control Panel, but none of the relevant applets (Wireless Link, Wireless Network Setup Wizard, etc.) look like they will do it. |

Just remember to re-enable it when you need wireless. I chose my example poorly, and gave you a mistaken understanding of the problem. I do not want to disable the wireless adapter. I want to make it stop displaying an intrusive message and making noise every time it finds a network. Forget the example where I am at home. Suppose I am in the reading room of a library. I can't disable the wireless adapter, because I need to use a wireless network, but the "beep" is no longer an irritation; it is a public nuisance. If I cannot turn it off, I cannot use my computer. |

Once more, the problem is NOT how to turn off the ADAPTER, but how to turn off the MESSAGE and the BEEP. There are situations where I need a wireless connection, but the noise is unacceptable. |

| Re: How to suppress "Wireless network found" notice? In practice, wireless connections are often disrupted transiently, and such messages pop up. However, I thought there was a setting to not be informed of such goings-on. I don't have an XP computer around to check (presuming that is the environment being discussed). I did not think that was possible, since I have already set the "Sounds and Audio Devices" applet's sound scheme to "No Sounds." That quite effectively silences all the noises that Windows makes, but has no effect on this. If Sounds and Audio Devices can control this noise, I need to know which sound to set to "None." I have reviewed the whole list, and none of them looks likely. By the way, I tried disabling the adapter as a temporary measure and found that it would not solve the problem even if I could accept the loss of wireless connectivity. When the adapter is disabled, the software simply displays a message saying that it's disabled, and beeps for that. |

| Re: How to suppress "Wireless network found" notice? Without me knowing which "beep" it specially is, it would suggest running through the list (you can do it on your machine) to "play" the sound you're hearing. Once you identify it, select the None setting. Try doing some of the system setting sounds first. -- Chris H. | Re: How to suppress "Wireless network found" notice? Sorry, Jonathan, but do you use the standard XP stack for wireless LAN, or another one, like the "Intel Pro set" or similar? The fact that setting the Windows sound scheme to "No Sounds" did not affect this sound suggests to me strongly -- almost conclusively -- that it is not under the "Sounds and Audio Devices" applet's control at all. If it is not, I could go through the whole list of sounds and set every one of them to "None," I would be right where I am now. Do you have a reason to believe that this is not so? Going through the list will be quite time consuming, but I am quite willing to do it if it will help. |

Device Manager says "Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection." That is the driver that Toshiba provided with the machine. |

| Re: How to suppress "Wireless network found" notice? If you're still receiving an audio warning with the sounds disabled, then it is probably coming from the Intel software and not a system file. Try this: Go into Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. Go near the bottom and enable and start Wireless Zero Configuration. OK your way out, and then open Network Connections, select the icon representing your wireless connection and right-click, selecting Properties. You will see three tabs, including Wireless Networks. Go there and put a check mark in Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings. OK your way back out and restart the system. Does that take care of the beep? -- Chris H. | Re: How to suppress "Wireless network found" notice? Dear Jonathan, I am referring to another issue: Please go to the properties panel of your wireless network. Go to the "Wireless Network" tab, and see if the "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" is checked (set).
