| Using Windows XP Tablet Toshiba Ed. w/ Gateway I own a Gateway M275 tablet PC. I want to install Windows XP tablet, Toshiba Protege edition on my Gateway. Will it work? Should it work? I'm inclined to believe the "Toshiba Protege edition" is only labeled as such because the OS was packaged with a Toshiba Protege. Any thoughts from experienced users? |

| Re: Using Windows XP Tablet Toshiba Ed. w/ Gateway I would agree with your assessment. The Toshiba version is also licensed to the Toshiba Tablet PC, with a different Product ID number/sequence. -- Chris H. | Re: Using Windows XP Tablet Toshiba Ed. w/ Gateway It may not even start the installation. Each OEM version is generally locked to specific hardware with drivers specific to that machine. Even if it does work, the licensing allows the installation of an OEM operating system only on the machine that it came with, or in the case of no computer, only on the computer to which it was first installed. The Gateway has a partition on it from which a disk can be created. If that partition is no longer functional, I'd suggest you call Gateway to see if you can get a copy of the disk(s). They usually are amenable to ship for a small fee. -- Terri Stratton Microsoft Featured Community http://thetabletpc.net Forums - http://forums.mobilepcworld.net Microsoft Windows MVP- Tablet PC "DrGateway" <DrGateway@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:502BB065-1C98-4777-B926-CCE8E4B60729@microsoft.com... >I own a Gateway M275 tablet PC. | Re: Using Windows XP Tablet Toshiba Ed. w/ Gateway Thanks fellas, I'm hoping I'll be able to run my Gateway. I picked up a new Toshiba XP tablet edition, because the price of it was too good to pass on. $40, while I wasn't even able to find Windows XP tablet (for all models) in many locations! I'll give it a shot, if it doesn't work I'll throw it on eBay. "terri" wrote: > It may not even start the installation. | Re: Using Windows XP Tablet Toshiba Ed. w/ Gateway The reason you couldn't find it is because it isn't an item that should be sold separately. Windows XP Edition is only to be sold with a new Tablet PC. Windows Vista, however, doesn't have that requirement. And Windows Vista runs decently on the M275 if you have a gig of ram. -- Terri Stratton Microsoft Featured Community http://thetabletpc.net Forums - http://forums.mobilepcworld.net Microsoft Windows MVP- Tablet PC "DrGateway" <DrGateway@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:E4DFC15B-E118-4579-A81C-E7C7CA1FEC38@microsoft.com... > Thanks fellas, I'm hoping I'll be able to run my Gateway. | Re: Using Windows XP Tablet Toshiba Ed. w/ Gateway That partition is not there, I loaned my tablet to a friend and it came back with nothing, some friend. Now I can't get it to recognize the tablet portion, it only installs xp from another full copy that I have. I have tried to get to tablet 2005 through xp sp2 and no luck. Please Help. | Re: Using Windows XP Tablet Toshiba Ed. w/ Gateway You need to either have access to the partition to create the back-up media, or contact the manufacturer's support telephone line to order a new set. They should supply it for a "nominal" shipping and handling fee. You've already paid for all the software, including the operating system, on the computer. -- Chris H. | Re: Using Windows XP Tablet Toshiba Ed. w/ Gateway I realize that but the partition does not exist and gateway said i had to buy a retail version of the software or send in my tablet so that their techs could reinstall the system for about $175 and who knows how much time. I have a full version of xp pro which should let me install tablet 2005 but that doesn't seem to work for some reason either. It simply installs as xp pro? | Re: Using Windows XP Tablet Toshiba Ed. w/ Gateway You cannot automatically get the Tablet PC Edition bits from a plain Windows XP disk. It doesn't work that way. I would suggest you contact the manufacturer's support section and tell them you need to purchase recovery media for your model Tablet PC. They should be able to sell you the disks directly, and not require that you send your unit in. If the first person you speak with doesn't "get it" then ask to speak with a supervisor.
