| Re: I have a tablet pc that is running Windows XP and I want to... The place I work for has a licensing agreement with Microsoft, so I'm not looking for something "off-the-shelf" per-se, I was curious to know if it was possible to take a tablet PC running Windows XP Pro and update to running Windows XP Tablet Edition? I apologize if I'm not making sense Nick "Chris H." wrote: > When the new Vista operating system becomes available for retail sales early > next year, yes, Nick. If it is, could you point me in the right direction? I see this old question is rearing it's ugly head again. If your "Tablet PC" did not come with the Tablet PC edition then it is most likely NOT a true Tablet PC. A couple of years ago many manufacturers sold laptops with touch screens as "Tablet PCs" even though they did not meet the requirements to do so. This caused much confusion and debate. If your "Tablet PC" is truly a Tablet PC then where the heck is the original install software? If you don't have it or can't get it for your SPECIFIC machine then you are basically out of luck. Sure some people have been able to install Win XP TPC edition on other machines using the MSDN disks but that is more expensive than two brand new tablet PC's. I can almost guarantee you that if your machine is not a true Tablet PC then you will NOT be able to get hardly any of the special features like inking to work. Though I cannot anticipate all of your questions; If your machine is - as I suspect - not a true Tablet PC then I can tell you right now that the answer to almost all of them will be, "No." Sorry. |

| Re: I have a tablet pc that is running Windows XP and I want to... NIck shared these words of wisdom: > The place I work for has a licensing agreement with Microsoft, so > I'm not looking for something "off-the-shelf" per-se, I was curious > to know if it was possible to take a tablet PC running Windows XP > Pro and update to running Windows XP Tablet Edition? It's *technically* possible. But it depends on (a) whether or not your employer has the licence included in its licence scheme and (b) the IT department has the medium (CD) available. Rainald |

Grant answered already, but if the "tablet pc" you have didn't originally come from the manufacturer with the Tablet PC Edition installed, it probably is not a Tablet PC as we support in this newsgroup. | Re: I have a tablet pc that is running Windows XP and I want to... Some, like the Fujitsu 1510D, were offered with both XP Pro and Tablet PC options. Also, the requirements are out the window with Vista since any computer can be a "tablet pc". It just comes down to having a better experience with an active digitizer or touchscreen with a HID driver. -- Josh Einstein / Tablet PC MVP Einstein Technologies, LLC ----------------------------------------------------- Tablet Enhancements for Outlook 3.0 Now Available Unleash the potential of Outlook on your Tablet PC, Origami, or UMPC. Now I won't have to mark all those threads about "using a separate Wacom digitizing tablet to try to simulate a Tablet PC on a desktop" to be ignored. |

| Re: I have a tablet pc that is running Windows XP and I want to... Windows XP SP2 and the Tablet PC Edition 2005 is not available through retail channels, and comes pre-installed on a Tablet PC from the manufacturer. Therefore, there is no media available to the general public to "upgrade." If a computer is a Tablet PC as supported in this newsgroup, the manufacturer would have the media and/or supplied a method of creating the recovery media. -- Chris H. | Re: I have a tablet pc that is running Windows XP and I want to... What if I don't want to use the OS version that shipped from the manufacturer? The manufacturer version comes with lots of utils that I don't need in my production environment, and it look cleaner to me to create an image from windows XP Professional than from the customized version of my Tablet PC manufacturer. | Re: I have a tablet pc that is running Windows XP and I want to... I'm sorry, but Microsoft decided the Tablet PC Edition (since 2002) would be available to the public on approved hardware meeting very rigid restrictions, such as the sampling rate of the digitizer, etc., and it is only available to the public on those machines. Vista will be available off-the-shelf, and contain both Tablet PC and Media Center Edition bits. In the meantime, do as I do: Uninstall the extra garbage, then use a program like Acronis True Image (or similar) and make an image to be stored on a partition on the same machine or one of your networked machines. You can have all the programs you normally use installed and set up, and if something goes wrong it only takes about 11 minutes to restore the full system back to something you know is solid. -- Chris H. If the cab files are on the disk from the manufacturer of your Tablet PC then just copy them and their entire I386 folder to a separate disk and install from that. If there is a separate folder called "CMPNENTS" you will need to copy that too. You install it using the standard winnt.exe in the I386 folder. If the files aren't on your setup disks then they will probably be on your hard drive. If you reformatted your drive already then just redo the manufacturer's install or EZ-Restore and then get the files off onto a CD or separate partition and go from there. |
