Vista Release Version (not RTM) on TC1100

Just thought I would post a quick message about installing Vista on the
TC1100.

I got the release version from MSDN yesterday and installed it on my
trusty TC1100 (1Ghz Cel M, 1.25 Gb) and it is working great. No Aero
though.

Only problem I have encountered is that it is no longer possible to
turn down the brightness via the Q Menu and I cannot find anywhere else
to do it, so battery life is affected.

Other then that everything I have done so far works great.

I am just installing Office 2007 to see what One Note is like.

Neil

RE: Vista Release Version (not RTM) on TC1100

It sounds like you did it as an upgrade, but I had a similar problem on my
laptop.
Vista blocks a LOT of startup services/programs from running, and one of
those happened to be my background app that enables my laptop's hardware
buttongs (some that I never use like e-mail/tv/help, and some that I need
like volume/wifi-on-off/brightness).

Try reinstalling the software for it.

Thanks a lot, Neil!

Did you just update the existing system or make a fresh install from
scratch?

The latter is natural with the small amont video-RAM the tc1100 has.

Is the Menu-item in the Q-Menu no longer there or is it just no longer
functional?

Great. This encorouges me to ask our IT-department to get me the now
finalized package and then run to install it my tc1100.

Do so!!
It's a fantastic application and the most used thing on my machine

Thanks again

I did an upgrade, I was happy that if it went wrong I could reinstall
but wanted to do an upgrade to start with to avoid any hassle.

Yeah, don't think it really matters anyway.

The Q menu comes up but when the brightness option is selected nothing
happens, no message box appears saying to use the jog dial. At that
point other parts of the OS starts to play up which I think is related.

Yeah, I liked the 2003 versio so am now getting used to the new one.
The only issue I had with the 2007 install (upgrade) was that it will
not upgrade Outlook 2003. Looks like an uninstall and install for
that.

Hi Neil

I have the RTM of Business Edition on my 1 Ghz 1.5 GB RAM TC1100.

The brightness still doesn't work, even with the Q Menu installed. The jog
dial doesn't work either!

I think overall, it works quite well - I just need to be able to adjust the
brightness to save battery life!

If you find a brightness solution please get in touch!

Vista Enterprise Release on TC1100 - my experience:

Did not work:
External monitor
Brightness Control
Vista Movie Maker (complains about directx10 card)
Aero Glass
SD Card Reader

Warnings:
Slingbox player gave warnings about being incompatible, but it worked
fine nonetheless

Office 2007 release, incuding OneNote 2007, worked fine under Vista, as you
would probalby expect. They also work fine under tablet 2005 (but Onenote
2007 will not ink on tablet versions under 2005, so if you want to use it on
non-vista versions SP2 is in your future...)

Everything else did that I can remember, including the jog control.
However, it did require going to the HP website and downloading XP drivers
to get some items to work. I do have to say that I ended up going back to
Tablet PC 2005 for now, at least until better driver support catches up. I
really needed the brightness control for power management and night use.
The others I can do without.

To others out there - It might be interesting to note that you will need a
wired lan connection after installation in order to get the wireless driver
for the machine. So pan accordingly if you decide to upgrade.

Thanks a lot for your report!

Different with the latter on my side.
I've been using Office and OneNote Betas since April and I now have
the RTM of "Office Pro Plus 2007" and Onenote 2007 installed on my
tc1100 under "XP SP2 TabletPC Edition".
Ink works in ON without any problem.
Did not test it with the rest of office so far.

Rainald
P.S. Did you over-install or make a fresh install from scratch?

Poor phrasing on my part - One Note 2007 will not ink on tablet windows OS
BEFORE tablet 2005, ( not UNDER 2005 ). It inks fine for me on Windows
Tablet 2005, which incorporates SP2.

>P.S. Did you over-install or make a fresh install from scratch?

I ended up installing Vista first from an upgrade, then from scratch - out
of morbid curiosity and self-loathing, not to mention some very misguided
experimentation with various legacy drivers (and still no brightness
control). Both worked the same, no problems. Interesting to note that the
upgrade did indeed seem to take a great deal longer.

Oh I see. Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks.
Think I'll try it both ways too - just to see how things work.
The brightness control is an important issue AFAICS.
We can only pray that Mr Hewlett & Mrs Packard will think of us users
of old hardware ;-)

Does not take wonder, IMHO.
The migration tools have quite something to do ...

Thnaks again

Re: Vista Release Version (not RTM) on TC1100

I installed the Q menu and the brightness feature works fine for me.

I used the drivers from HPs site I had downloaded today, set up compatibility on the install file for Windows XP SP2, selected the option to run the .exe as administrator and ran the file as per normal.

Just to verify - you have adjustable brightness contol through qmenu (you
can see the brightness difference) on a TC1100 running Vista?

From my understanding it would not change anything to set up the install
file itself as being xp SP2 compatible, but if this is correct you have had
different results... may have to adjust my understanding... ;)
