New Toshiba M400 so far so good

Received my new M400 Monday, from Toshiba Direct. Apparently it flew
from China to Osaka twice just to make it fun. Then UPS left a $3000
computer on my front porch without knocking much less asking for a
signature. Fortunately my wife was home and heard the truck and
brought it in.

I used the file transfer utility to move files from my M200, which is
retiring, and spent much of Monday afternoon and today installing
things. So far, so good.

It has 2 gig of memory and Core Duo 2.3 gHz chip, and compared to the
M200, or my buddy's IBM X41, it is blindingly fast.

Looks good so far ... hope it stays that way. I've resolved for the
15th time not to load so much junk on it so it'll stay clean and fast.

We'll see. Wish me luck!

RE: New Toshiba M400 so far so good

Congratulations Ron!!! I also have a M400, although mine has a Core Duo
1,83ghz and just 1gb of ram, but even so it's a very powerful machine, and
for my job (I'm a teacher) is wonderful.

I also had problems with reception, cause they hitted it and damage
motherboard, but they changed it very fast (of course!!!) and now it is a
flash.

I expect you enjoy it so much as I do.

PD: Sorry for my English, I come from Spain, so it isn't my natural
language. ;)

One point to make. I noticed that the M400 is now available with the
Core 2 Duo chip from Intel. It's my feeling that this is a much better
processor than the origianl Core Duo chips from Intel and it's well
worth going with the Core 2 Duo chip rather than the standard Core Duo
chip when ordering a machine.

But, what I want to know is if/how I can put a Core 2 to replace my
Core Duo. I upgraded my old Inspiron with a new CPU.

I've thought about it myself, but just don't feel like tracking it down
and spending the money. The significant change for us would be better
power management, but on the at the bleeding edge performance needs,
the Core 2 Duo is so much better that it tops the AMD dual core
performance. Something the original Core Duo was unable to achieve.
But for what I use my machine for it's fast enough.

Core 2 Duos are available via retail, the 2GHz is $300 or so at
Newegg. To get at the CPU in the M400, you've got to do a good amount
of disassembly, but the CPU is in a socket and can be removed.

Dumb question:
Does the rest of the system support the Core 2 Duo architecture?

It's a good question, but I'd assume so, since they're selling M400
with Core 2's in them. Unfortunately at this point, there's no new
specs that include the Core 2 info.

I'm tempted to give it a try, but I just dropped too much money on an
x6800/8800gtx/680i system.

I would not take that for granted.
There could be modifications with the chipset, the bus etc.
Depending on the manufacturer there may be varaiations without
renaming the model.

If temptation gets too big, don't give in without having asked Toshiba
for reconfirmation.
