| Tablet PC upgrade Is Tablet PC included i a new install of Windows XP Professional? I am trying to upgrade an older tablet that is running2000 pro. I need to replace the hard drive so now is the time to go to XP if I am going to. |

| Re: Tablet PC upgrade No, it isn't. You cannot "upgrade" an "older" Tablet PC which has been running Windows 2000 to run the current Windows XP SP2 and the Tablet PC Edition 2005 unless you have access to an MSDN subscription for development purposes only. There is no availability of the Tablet PC Edition other than through a OEM purchase at this time. -- Chris H. | Re: Tablet PC upgrade Another possibility is Vista which has the Tablet functionality built-in. There is not a separate Vista Tablet PC edition. I reformatted my Tablet (running XP Tablet Edition) and installed the latest beta version of Vista. It works wonderfully on my Tablet. As you can not purchase XP Tablet PC Edition, and probably never will be able to, you may wish to go Vista (even though it's only beta at the moment) as that may eventually be the only OS you can purchase for your computer. Just an option... |

| Re: Tablet PC upgrade On a computer which does not have the proper digitizers, etc., required by Tablet PCs the user will end up with a generic install of the operating system. Just like Media Center Edition being part of Vista now, unless there's a tuner (among other things), the installer won't be able to record TV. 8-) -- Chris H. | Re: Tablet PC upgrade Bzzzzt. Not true. I've said this several times. Hardware does NOT determine whether or not the Tablet PC functionality is installed with Vista. It is available on every single machine running every version of Vista except Home Basic. Desktop, laptop, OQO, Origami devices, whatever... they all get journal/TIP/sticky notes/recognizers/etc. So even a regular old touch screen computer (assuming it is even able to run Vista at all) can use the Tablet PC features. | Re: Tablet PC upgrade Although the bits may install, they won't work as completely as intended without the proper hardware. This is one of the problems with some of the computers sold with MCE as it was cheaper than XP Pro. People thought they were going to go home and be able to watch and record TV on their computers not realizing that they needed to have a TV tuner. -- Terri Stratton Microsoft Featured Community http://thetabletpc.net Windows MVP - Tablet PC http://writepc.com - a site for UMPCs "Jason Tsang" <jason-onlineDEL@ETEmvps.org> wrote in message news:eow%23wyS%23GHA.2300@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl... >A tv tuner also isn't required for the media center bits to be installed. > > -- > Jason Tsang - Microsoft MVP > > Read my blog for the latest in Media Center topics > (and other topics that interest me) > http://jtsang.blogspot.com > > More information by me > http://jtsang.mvps.org > http://www.classicsunveiled.com > > Find out about the MS MVP Program - > http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/default.aspx > > > > "Josh Einstein" <josheinstein********.com> wrote in message > news:E88BBE8D-B03F-4AAB-8702-63B7804AEF85@microsoft.com... >> Bzzzzt. | Re: Tablet PC upgrade But the point Jason and I are trying to make is that the lack of a particular piece of hardware will not result in a "generic install of the operating system" as Chris put it. Vista wisely allows the software pieces to install normally and that way if someone later adds a Wacom tablet to their desktop or if they have a touch screen monitor, or just feel like trying tablet apps with their mouse, they can do so. And if they add a TV tuner later on, then the record feature will work. If not, playback still works. Etc. That's the only point I am trying to get across. -- Josh Einstein / Tablet PC MVP Einstein Technologies, LLC ----------------------------------------------------- Tablet Enhancements for Outlook 3.0 Now Available Unleash the potential of Outlook on your Tablet PC, Origami, or UMPC.
