Screen Orientation Changes By Itself

I have a Gatewaty M275, and since I have had it (about 2 1/2 years) the
screen orientation and brightness changes by itself. The last time it did
this (this morning), I wasn't even at the computer when it flipped on me.
When it does this the tablet feature buttons stop working, and I must go into
the settings to change the orientation back. I have sent it back to Gateway 3
times already to get the problem fixed, not to mention the hours I have have
spent with tech support troubleshooting, but nothing seems to fix the problem.

Also, I had one tech once tell me some key-strokes I could use to change the
orientation, and they worked when the tablet was acting up, but I forgot what
they were...does anybody know what they are???

I am ready to tell Gateway that I want a new tablet, but before I go through
all of the hassle, if anybody out there knows what is going on, I would
appreciate it if you could clue me in!

Make sure to avoid that warranty runs out.
With 3 unsessusful repiars you should be entitled for a replacement.

Re: Screen Orientation Changes By Itself

I've forwarded your post to my contact at Gateway. He's done a lot for
other users who have had unsuccessful results using tech support.

I'll keep you posted as I hear from him. In the meantime, if you send my
your correct e-mail address, I can pass it on to him.

The same thing kept happening on my Tablet PC. I concluded that the
switches that detect when I rotate the screen were flaky. I just turned
off the auto-rotate feature. { Display Properties ; <Settings> ;
[Advanced] ; <Screen Rotation>, Screen Orientation, [ ]Enable automatic
screen rotate }.

The brightness could be an automatic "feature" that just bugs you like it
bugged me. I just turned that off too. I had to do it within some of the
software from Acer so you will have to look for how to do it within your
Gateway software.

I purchased the extra-extended warranty so I still have over a year left, but
I have sent in a request for a replacement.

RE: Screen Orientation Changes By Itself

It appears that I am the first to ever report a problem like this, so it is
just trial and error at this point. Terri's Gateway contact has been very
helpful in walking me through some possible solutions. We updated the BIOS
and the WACOM driver and we are going to see if that helps. Since the screen
flipping is random, I don’t know if and when it will happen again (it could
be in 5 minutes or another month), but we want to take it one step at a time
so if we do fix it we can isolate the problem/solution.

Thanks again Terri!

RE: Screen Orientation Changes By Itself

It just flipped again, so the 2 updates we did were not the solution. Right
after it flipped the screen also dimmed by itself. True to form, the buttons
on the screen stopped working as well.

I e-mailed the Gateway contact, but I am going out of town until next week,
so I won't be able to work on it until then...

Re: Screen Orientation Changes By Itself

From what I read, he didn't expect the early fixes to really stop the issue,
but as a way of ruling them out.

You're in the right hands now, so I know you'll get the service that I wish
all those needing manufacturer support could get.

RE: Screen Orientation Changes By Itself

Have you tried to do a system restoration? my computer's rotate screen
button was not working. and stayed upside down and this feature fixed it for
me. not sure if it is a permanent fix but it did work so far. start button,
help and support, system restore. otherwise. good luck.

RE: Screen Orientation Changes By Itself

Gateway has offered to replace my system for me, and even though I hate the
idea of relaoding all of my programs and moving all of my data over, nobody
seems to have even heard of my problem, let alone a solution to it, so I
think I will be taking them up on their offer. I am trying to find out from
them if they will replace it with a M275 even though they no longer make this
model. Their techs can't answer my question, so I will have to go up the
line....I'm hoping they will replace it with their current model because then
I will be able to purchase the internal DVD-burner to go along with it, the
only feature I wanted that the M275 didn't offer!

Re: Screen Orientation Changes By Itself

More than likely, it will be with a refurbed M275, but I'll hope you get the
new model. At least you're getting some results. That's better than some
others I've heard about (not necessarily Gateway).
