| Is this a good time to buy my 1st Tablet PC? Hi all, I want to buy my 1st tablet pc, and was looking around at the options. My basic requirement for a tablet are (in order of importance) Vista Business (maybe Ultimate), 14" screen (13.3" might also be fine), 2GB RAM, 2GHz Core 2 Duo, 1440 x 900 res (or close), Preferably non-integrated graphics, but that seems like a pipe dream, Battery life, Weight. So, as you can see, size and weight is not so important to me, as I don't plan on using it in a standing position much. This will be used for drawing up new UI designs, while commuting on a train, etc. I want to spend no more than $2500 out the door on it. I was initially looking at the Tecra M7, until I realized that they have been EOLed by Toshiba. My next choice is a tricked out Asus R1 (you can bump the CPU from some places like AGear, see http://store.agearnotebooks.com/asusr1fs.html). So, is this a good time to buy a new tablet, or is there some new models just around the corner that will cause me to kick myself if I buy one right now? I ask this because currently there seems to be a lull as vendors switch over from XP to Vista, and I know Intel is coming out with new chipsets like the GMA 965 in the near future, integrated flash memory for use with ReadyBoost, etc etc... BTW, a side question: Can I do an online upgrade of Vista Business to Vista Ultimate on an OEM version of Vista? I would really like some advice from those that have a better idea of the current roadmap wrt to tablets in general. BitFlipper |

| Re: Is this a good time to buy my 1st Tablet PC? Have you looked at the specs on the Toshiba R400? It might be another option. The M7 may be EOL'd, but I wouldn't be surprised in another followed with similar specs. After all, the M4 was superceded by the M7. If the specs are what you want, then I wouldn't worry about the EOL. Support will be the same whether a newly-released machine or one that's been around a bit. -- Terri Stratton Microsoft Featured Community http://thetabletpc.net Forums http://forums.mobilepcworld.net Microsoft Windows MVP- Tablet PC "BitFlipper" <BitFlipper@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:CE5F7944-8A7D-4006-B7EA-FF8DDBE3134E@microsoft.com... > Hi all, > > I want to buy my 1st tablet pc, and was looking around at the options. | Re: Is this a good time to buy my 1st Tablet PC? The problem with the R400 is that it has a 12.1" screen. After looking at non-tablet laptops at Best Buy that have 12.1" screens, I just decided that it is too small for my taste. I wish that was not the case because that reduces my tablet options dramatically, but it really is important to me. As for the Tecra M7, it is just that it is becoming harder to find it in the configuration I want it in, and this turns out to be most likely related to the fact that it has been EOLed. Also, looking at the reviews, it got a so-so rating, so while it is one of the few that have all of the features I want, it just didn't have the "wow" factor I was looking for (not like the Lenovo X60, for instance, but that one has the 12.1" screen I'd like to avaid). | Re: Is this a good time to buy my 1st Tablet PC? It is very true about the "if you wait for something better, you will wait forever" type circular logic. But... Having said that, we are in noticeable transition period where Vista just came out and new hardware is being designed to take advantage of some of its new features. For instance, new laptops/tablets might have *onboard*, integrated flash memory that makes use of ReadyBoost/SuperFetch features in Vista. Also, I'd really like to get something better than the current integrated video solutions the current crop of tablets have. I mean, when are we going to see Intel's 965 on tablets? That one seems to do away with a lot of the shortcoming of the 945GM (or 950?). The current crop of integrated video was just not designed with Vista in mind, which is the first MS OS that really benefits from better 3D support. The fact that Toshiba EOLed the M7 means that they will be releasing a replacement 14.1" tablet for it sometime in the future. This might very well be the one that will have everything I want, but without knowing for sure when this will be released, I might as well go with the Asus R1F. That is, unless someone has some concrete info that it will be released soon? That is what I mean by "is this a good time to buy, or should I wait x weeks because something really good is about to be released?" | Re: Is this a good time to buy my 1st Tablet PC? I think being able to run Vista and get the full Aero experience is more important to me than most other people, simply because I will be using the tablet to try out and demo new UI designs (amongst other things). As such, it would be good to be able to get the full experience. My understanding is that Vista will run with the full Aero effects on the current tablets, but not having seen it in action myself, I do not know just how smooth it is. If it is somewhat sluggish then it might give me the wrong impression about a particular UI design. I know I am nitpicking but this is an area that is important to me, so "Vista is Vista, whether you run all the eye candy or not" is not an accurate statement in my particular case. I agree with all your other points, so I might as well go ahead and get the Asus R1F it seems. | Re: Is this a good time to buy my 1st Tablet PC? I'm running it complete with Aero on a couple of Lenovo x60 Tablets as well as Gateway. One of the Lenovos is an upgrade from XP and the others are clean installs. No sluggishness on any of them. I'll be the first to admit that I don't do any coding or testing like you're describing, though, so your experiences could be different. I have also used the Asus and fell in love with it immediately. As for graphics capability, my Ferrari 1000 and the Lenovos and Asus all had similar ratings, between 3 and 3.1. Not great, but adequate. I don't like the rating system since it uses only the lowest rating, but it's what we have. -- Terri Stratton Microsoft Featured Community http://thetabletpc.net Forums - http://forums.mobilepcworld.net Microsoft Windows MVP- Tablet PC "BitFlipper" <BitFlipper@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:0EEB6747-212F-484B-B8C7-9BC183D7C02C@microsoft.com... >I think being able to run Vista and get the full Aero experience is more > important to me than most other people, simply because I will be using the > tablet to try out and demo new UI designs (amongst other things). | Re: Is this a good time to buy my 1st Tablet PC? Thanks for the info! This is very re-assuring indeed. I think I am going to order the Asus R1F. Right now it seems a good place to get it is at www.btotech.com. They allow me to customize it (bump the CPU to 2GHz w 4MB cache, the HD to 100GB at 7200rpm) and their prices seem pretty good (they are in NY, I am in CA). Of course I am always interested to hear in better alternatives... BitFlipper "terri" wrote: > I'm running it complete with Aero on a couple of Lenovo x60 Tablets as well > as Gateway. | Re: Is this a good time to buy my 1st Tablet PC? I got the specs on my site directly from Asus and it listed firewire. Now, looking at the site, I don't see firewire listed. http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1...99&modelmenu=2. Doing a search on the site for either firewire or IEEE comes up with nothing. I haven't looked, but have you checked http://alltp.com? The fact that they let you try a machine before finalizing the purchase is a big plus to a lot of people. I definitely agree about the upgrade to a 7200rpm drive. That speeds data retrieval up considerably. -- Terri Stratton Microsoft Featured Community http://thetabletpc.net Forums - http://forums.mobilepcworld.net Microsoft Windows MVP- Tablet PC "BitFlipper" <BitFlipper@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:39434B85-496E-4510-AB7C-4EC3E93E577C@microsoft.com... > Thanks for the info! | Re: Is this a good time to buy my 1st Tablet PC? Do I really need to justify my need for a tablet? We are all grownups here... But just to give you one good reason anyway... I do UI designs and I often want to draw out ideas quickly as they pop into my head. Just about every other software tool I have used on non-tablet PCs just get in the way for this particular use (mainly because of the clunky mouse). I find my tiny Pocket PC to be more useful than my full-blown laptop in this regard, and often wish I had a laptop with a touch screen. So a tablet is a perfect fit. Is that a good enough reason? I also have other reasons, but once again, I am here to get info to make the best informed purchase of a tablet pc, not to explain why I need to do it in the first place. | Re: Is this a good time to buy my 1st Tablet PC? Yea, that is pretty much the conclusion I got to, that it doesn't have firewire. It is weird that some sites display so prominently that it does have firewire. I even called and asked one seller and they insisted that it had firewire. Which is why I got so confused about the whole thing.
