| Upgrading to Tablet PC Edition 2005 I have a Toshiba R15 Tablet PC right now and I would like to format it and start over from scratch. Toshiba did not send a copy of Tablet PC with the computer, however did attach the authentic product key onto the computer. I don't have any way to install Tablet PC ed on my computer now. Would Microsoft send me a copy of the OS? I have also heard that if XP is installed on the computer, downloading SP2 from windows update will automatically upgrade to Tablet PC Edition 2005. Is this true? Thanks |

| Re: Upgrading to Tablet PC Edition 2005 No, you can't get a copy of the OS from MS. You should have a way to recover the original setup from Toshiba, either in a recovery CD or a partition on the Tablet itself. If you install XP on the computer, then you'll have XP. The keys won't match for Tablet PC Edition. This is one of the big complaints we all have about Tablets, but the drivers are specific to each Tablet manufacturer and it's most effective for most users to have one setup. There are others who have been able to wipe and start over using an MSDN version, but that is really for developers for testing and not meant for any production machine. -- Terri Stratton Editor / Owner http://thetabletpc.net http://themediacenterpc.net Microsoft Featured Communities Microsoft Windows MVP - Tablet PC "Porsche593" <Porsche593@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:EBEAD604-E779-4AC0-A983-07333CEBD6FE@microsoft.com... >I have a Toshiba R15 Tablet PC right now and I would like to format it and > start over from scratch. | Re: Upgrading to Tablet PC Edition 2005 The XP SP2 update and Tablet PC Edition 2005 will only install on an existing operating system, not give you the full thing. You should check your documentation if you didn't receive the "recovery" CD/DVD set, or contact Toshiba for the correct instructions on your model if they've opted to put a "recovery" partition on the hard drive where you need to burn your own CDs. Is there a specific issue which is making you want to start over? It may be more simple to repair the issue, if we had additional information. You should, however, find out the correct procedure for having the recovery media available to you. -- Chris H. | RE: Upgrading to Tablet PC Edition 2005 Actually I do have the recovery CD/DVD from Toshiba. The only reason I am wanting a fresh copy is because I do not want all the clutter Toshiba packs onto the computer with their default system restore. I hate the fact that my Tablet is running 55 processes or more. It only has 512 ram! I just think it is annoying to have to have all the junk Toshiba throws into the whole thing and I would rather format my drive and install from scratch so I can choose what I want on MY computer. I guess I am just ranting after all since their appears to be no actuall fresh copy of Windows Tablet ED. |

| Re: Upgrading to Tablet PC Edition 2005 In this case, you need to weed out items - carefully - you don't find necessary to the operation of your Toshiba. There are some which I won't have on my machine, and those same things are well-liked by others. One, and I don't know if your system has it installed, is the Sensiva Symbol Commander. Others can't live without it, but for my usage it trips me up more often then it really assists. 8-) One thing you can do to streamline your Tablet PC is go to Start/Run and put in "msconfig" without the quotes. This runs the System Configuration Utility. Go to the Startup tab. You will need to drag the little column dividers wider to read the Command column, but read what is there. You'll find some necessary items, like TRot, 000THotkey, tabtip, TabUserW, etc., which should not be stopped. However, you may spot something is running you don't need, and can trace down from the command name what those items are before removing the check mark from the box to prevent them from starting. Removing the check mark won't uninstall the item, if you later find it has put a crimp in something you do, but prevents the item from starting when you boot your system. Also, depending on your usage, you can go into Device Manager and disable (right-click, Disable - does not uninstall) things like unnecessary networking hardware you normally don't use. I don't use the dial-up software, NIC or Bluetooth - primarily on wireless on my LAN - so I stop those from running. Cutting down on those items can also have the beneficial result of increasing your battery time because they aren't causing an active drain. 8-) I have some other tips and tricks on my web site in my signature below. -- Chris H.
