| Should I get a Tablet PC for medical school? I start medical school in August and I am unsure if a Tablet PC is something that would help me be more productive or counter productive. I don't know much about how Windows XP Tablet Edition works. In undergraduate college I found myself scanning my notes into my computer as PDF's and posting them Online to share them with classmates very often. It would be nice to be able to write my notes on a TabletPC allowing me to skip the paper to digital document conversion, which is time consuming. I also can imagine that searching for what your looking for in your notes, etc. would be much easier than flipping through a notebook or binder. I also see the benefits of getting very familiar with the functionality and capabilities of a Tablet PC because I can see myself using them in the future for when I will be treating patients. Will Tablet PC's give me the flexibility I will need when taking notes in classes that don't simply require you to write letters, but also symbols and illustrations? Can I write on Tablet PC as if I were writing in my handwriting on a piece of paper and easily save it as a PDF? If I was to use a Tablet PC I would definitely convert all paper documents (i.e. letters from the school, schedules, syllabi, returned tests) into digital to always have on me. Will this be effecient, or am I being to much of a computer geek? Of course I will have to carry around books that are not available on CD-ROM. Please let me know your thoughts. Also feel free to recommend available models of TabletPC's that you think will fulfill my needs. Thank you, David Levi david@bbnyc.net AIM: davidlevi@mac.com |

| Re: Should I get a Tablet PC for medical school? dazizl, I think a Tablet is a good choice for you, especially with a program like Agilix GoBinder. I wouldn't be surprised to see almost all doctors being nearly completely digital by the time you're ready to join their ranks. Just look back the same amount of years and see how things have changed. -- Terri Stratton Editor / Owner http://thetabletpc.net http://themediacenterpc.net Microsoft Featured Communities Microsoft Windows MVP - Tablet PC "dazizl" <davidlevi******.com> wrote in message news:1122169418.880342.111890@z14g2000cwz.googlegr oups.com... >I start medical school in August and I am unsure if a Tablet PC is > something that would help me be more productive or counter productive. > I don't know much about how Windows XP Tablet Edition works. > > In undergraduate college I found myself scanning my notes into my > computer as PDF's and posting them Online to share them with classmates > very often. > > It would be nice to be able to write my notes on a TabletPC allowing me > to skip the paper to digital document conversion, which is time > consuming. > > I also can imagine that searching for what your looking for in your > notes, etc. would be much easier than flipping through a notebook or > binder. > > I also see the benefits of getting very familiar with the functionality > and capabilities of a Tablet PC because I can see myself using them in > the future for when I will be treating patients. > > Will Tablet PC's give me the flexibility I will need when taking notes > in classes that don't simply require you to write letters, but also > symbols and illustrations? | Re: Should I get a Tablet PC for medical school? I need a recommendation for a Tablet PC. I don't need something with a lot of power. Some features I'm looking for are: - Sleek economical design (I use Mac as home and their designs are very stream lined, such as their AC adapter) - Decent battery life - Built in 802.11b or 802.11g - No need for attached keyboard - Light weight (I wouldn't mind a small screen, if it doesn't make notetaking too tedious) Thanks Fritz and Terri for the speedy replies. |

| Re: Should I get a Tablet PC for medical school? Check out the Motion Computing LS800: http://www.motioncomputing.com/produ...blet_pc_ls.asp It will fit in your white coat pocket. The battery only lasts 3 hours but you can hot-swap them. If your medical school has WiFi you will be able to impress your fellow students and the faculty by using web-based decision support on a computer you carry in your pocket. | Re: Should I get a Tablet PC for medical school? You think the 8.4" screen is sufficient to comfortably take notes? Also, I feel that I will want a built in keyboard. Maybe I'm not being realistic, and I will never end up using the keyboard while I'm at school. But, I wouldn't mind taking notes with a keyboard in classes that don't require you to write symbols and/or illustrations. I was looking at the LifeBook T4010 and the HP TC4200. They both have 12" screens and built in keyboards. What do you think of these models? Thanks for the advice Mickey. |

| Re: Should I get a Tablet PC for medical school? For the first two years of medical school a regular size tablet would be fine. For the clinical years a white coat pocket size computer will be the only size you will want. For courses like anatomy and biochemistry you would definitely want to use a computer in tablet mode - a lot of your note taking with be graphical material such as structures and pathways. For many others you could go either way, but my guess is that your main uses for a keyboard will be things you use from your residence such as email or writing up lab reports, and a stand with a plug-in keyboard would be fine.
