Toshiba R15 start up

I have had my tablet for about 2 months, now. No problems. Yesterday,
the tablet worked fine for me. Then later in the day, when I booted, it
just kind of froze. I got the desktop image, but the icons and task bar
never popped up. In the task manager, only 28 of the 70 or so processes
were running. I shut down and got the message that explorer.exe was
shutting down in __secs. Did I want to end now? Or something like that.
I rebooted five times and the same. When I got back to my room, I was
going to check it out and everything booted up fine. I defragged, ran a
scan and all of that thinking it might help.

Today, all day the TPC worked fine, but then just now it did the same
thing. Someone suggested I take the battery out and put it back in (I've
been on AC all day). I did and rebooted and the PC booted up.

Any ideas as to fix this or what to look for? Thanks.

Re: Toshiba R15 start up

I believe the battery suggestion is to shut the system down, remove both
external and internal (battery) power and let the unit sit for 20 minutes or
a half hour. Reinsert the battery and a/c again, and then start the unit.
Sometimes they might just need to breathe for a few minutes of not doing
anything.

Otherwise, have you thoroughly checked your system with your anti-virus
software using the latest definitions? If not, I suggest immediately doing
that, and also check for spyware/malware/Trojans, etc. There is some very
good information at MVP Jim Eshelman's web site: www.aumha.org/secure.htm.
Most of the spy-checkers are free.

If none of this corrects the issues, you may have either bad memory or it
could even be the hard drive may be going, and I would suggest you contact
Toshiba support immediately. There support folks are really easy to work
with.

Hm, interesting, I've seen this last few days, too (Acer Extensa 2300
laptop) with a fully patched system (XP Pro SP2) and latest AV. I logged in
as a different user, logged off and then could log in.
Maybe one of the July patches has unveiled this issue?

Stefen, I haven't see the same issue here on three machines - just for
comparison.

Re: Toshiba R15 start up

Thanks for the response. I did an AV scan, and spyware scan as well.
I ran a diagnostic on my hard drive and nothing came up. Is there a
way to run a test on memory to rule that out?

Re: Toshiba R15 start up

Hmmm. If your system is clean, did you do an update from Microsoft a couple
days ago like Stefen noted? If so, try using a Restore Point from System
Restore to retreat to the position the Tablet was in prior to the update and
see if the behavior is different. If it isn't, then it wasn't the update (I
haven't seen that result here on three Tablets). I would contact the
Toshiba support toll-free number and see what they have to offer.

I haven't seen it anywhere else, only on this machine. Have checked in the
Generwal WinXP group and found nothing, we'll see...

Re: Toshiba R15 start up

One never knows. 8-) Backing out of it with a Restore Point might be a
good test.

Re: Toshiba R15 start up

I did do the latest update before heading out to school. I haven't had
any problems since the first email, so who knows. When I get back
home, I'll play around see what happens.

Chris, thanks for your diligence on this board. You always provide a
lot of help.

Cool, hope it stays steady. Could you please quote at least the pertinent
portion of the message to which you're responding. Just seeing your answer,
then going back through the previous posts to figure out which one it
pertains to is a bit of a pain. 8-)
