speech profile keeps getting lost

So this is the fourth time this has happened in a month. I start the
tablet, the input panel comes up like normal, but the speech buttons are
gone. I do the tool/speech, and it gives me the "welcome to speech..." crap
and wants me to train a new profile.

I've tried setting up an alternate profile, and it still sees the name, it's
like it just lost the training files.

This wouldn't be so bad if there were some way to back up the profile and
later restore it after this happens. Any way to either make it stop, or
back it up to restore when it happens again? All this re-training is
starting to cut into my time pretty bad.

Re: speech profile keeps getting lost

Jordan, there is a means to back up your speech information:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
I'm more concerned with the "lost" portion and why that is happening.

Could you please post back with more information, such as which Tablet PC
you're running, whether you're running Windows XP SP2 and the Tablet PC
Edition 2005 or not, and try to think back to when this condition first
started and whether or not you've installed a specific program just before
this started.

If you can pinpoint a specific point where you noticed the issue, you can
use a Restore Point from System Restore to move back before the problem
started.

Re: speech profile keeps getting lost

Windows xp sp2 tablet pc edition. No software installs.

Actually, I had just installed the fix to the ink memory leak (and despite
the disclamer, I did need it). I can't recall any software installs causing
it before. We have restore points turned off too. Thanks, I'll use the
link.

Re: speech profile keeps getting lost

Thanks for the information. You're only using the built-in Tablet PC
speech, correct? There is no third-party speech program installed? Are you
using a separate User account, and not "the" Administrator account, correct?
Do you have multiple user accounts created, beside your account? If you
have the situation of your account and the Admin account, could you create
another User and do a short training session with it to see if that also
disappears?

Re: speech profile keeps getting lost

Correct on all:
Built in speech, nothing else added
Not using the administrator account (but I am an administrator, dumb work
policies)
There are other accounts on the computer, and it's in a domain with plenty
more (using local profile storage, no roaming profiles on the server)

I'll see about setting up another trained profile under another user

Thanks, Jordan. I honestly haven't heard of this issue before. Hopefully
we'll be able to figure out what has happened, and how to correct it.

Re: speech profile keeps getting lost

Odd, it's happened on two separate computers on two separate networks (both
that I've bothered with speech training on). Thanks for looking at it.

I did some more training, and now when I try to export the profile it gives
me this (I had to do an OCR of a screenshot, so it's all gunked up, but you
can probably get the general idea - the trailing keys are right):

Re: speech profile keeps getting lost

Okay, perhaps a false alarm. I had to restart, then log off and back on
again. It worked on the third try.

Re: speech profile keeps getting lost

Haven't had much time to test the new one. Got kinda busy at work today.
No losses yet. But I'll give it a few days before I stop watching it so
close.

It looks like the tool basically goes through some files (they look kinda
like registry hives?) in your profile and extracts certain files in them to
save elsewhere. It seemed to be having trouble making sense of the files.
I guess something had them locked, but it was pretty persistent.

Re: speech profile keeps getting lost

I really don't know what that program does (and a lot of others, too), but
hopefully the situation will stabilize for you with the new user's data.
