xp cannot read hard-drive (blue screen of death)

I'm running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition on a Toshiba M205.

I kept getting the blue screen and thought the problem was this tabtip.exe
memory leak that seems to be annoying everyone, not just me. So I ran the
batch file and all seemed to be going reasonably well until the hard drive
started making a terrible whirring noise (it has whirred in the past but
never like this) and then everything stops and eventually freezes.

When I turn it off, let it sit for a while and then restart I send an error
message to Microsoft and the online crash analysis website pops up and tells
me:
"Windows was temporarily unable to read your hard disk drive. This problem
is general in nature and unfortunately we are unable to determine the
specific cause of the read error from the error report. In most cases this
problem is temporary and can be ignored; however, if the problem is occurring
repeatedly we recommend you follow the additional troubleshooting steps in
this article."

It mentions that the problem can be caused by media from a remote location
to the hard drive, by a drive lag caused by filter drivers and virus scanners
etc. I am running McAfee and I am also dealing with a lot of foreign
language fonts and moving them from file to file. The last time this
happened (and I discovered the memory leak) I was working on a big project
(Microsoft Word, Adobe and IE running) and had lots of windows open, the same
happened this time. But once it happens I can't just shut the system down
and restart and everything is happy, instead the computer will only run for
anywhere from 2 hours to 30 minutes before the screen comes back regardless
of the number of programs I'm running or windows I have open. In fact this
morning I was only running Word and it died after only 35 minutes.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening to my new little tablet? is
my hard drive corrupt or is there something wrong with my version of windows?
is this connected in any way to the memory leak? I just want to be able to
work on my dissertation for longer than an hour at a time.

any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Kelli

Re: xp cannot read hard-drive (blue screen of death)

Sounds like a bad hard drive, Kelli. I would first look in Control
Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer where you can see (in the left pane)
listings for Application and System. If you'll tap Application first, it
will reveal yellow exclamation points and possibly red circles with white
X's in them. Those are error messages which may point out the problem. Do
the same on System, and write down the results.

Then, I would immediately contact Toshiba and see what their techs say
regarding those error messages. They may want you to run some other
diagnostics on the machine to further pinpoint the issue, too.

I agree with Chris, this doesn't sound healthy. I would also IMMEDIATELY back
up critical data files to an external device or file share. The likelihood is
that you're going to have to replace that hard drive, and you'll lose
everything on it. So get anything critical off of it. Now.

Bummer. Thanks for the advice. Files are backed up and I'll check with
Toshiba.

Many thanks,
Kelli

Re: xp cannot read hard-drive (blue screen of death)

Kelli, the Toshiba folks are very, very good with repairs. When you send
your computer in, they'll give you a case number and direct you to a special
section on their web where you can track the progress of what they're doing
with your unit. Rather interesting.
