Undocking the Input Panel?

In a column I read last night by Jeff West about handwriting recognition, in
a discussion about using the gesture to open the TIP (docked at the bottom),
he says (can't get the page right now, for some reason, so I will quote from
memory): "To undock the TIP, double-click the title bar." Apparently, by
doing this, you switch from the big, docked TIP at the bottom, to the
little, floating TIP up the page, near where you want to write.

OK, I tried that. The only title bar I know of is the one at the top of the
web page. When I double-click on that, either before or after gesturing to
bring up the TIP at the bottom of the page, it toggles the web page from
full screen to windowed.

Is he talking about some other "title bar"? The TIP does not have a title
bar, that I can see. It would be convenient to bring it up small, whenever
I wanted, instead of depending on the whim of the program I am using.

Re: Undocking the Input Panel?

Mack, if you invoke the Undock in the Tablet Input Panel, then you never
ever again need to use the gesture to launch the TIP because it is supposed
to appear when you're using the pen AND in a text input area. If you
gesture the TIP icon on the Taskbar, then it interprets the move as one to
launch the TIP in Dock mode.

By the same token, not all programs have the proper tagging for the text
input, so you may not see the floating (TIP access) icon. Some programs,
like Firefox, don't properly identify themselves for text input, so you
would need to use the gesture, then the docked TIP for inserting the
conversion of handwriting to text. Identification, since Tablet PCs are so
new, is an on-going project - even for Microsoft programs.

For instance, the basic Office 2003 family programs, which are doing pretty
well with Ink, already have an update (Office 2003 Tablet PC Update:
Improved Ink Recognition) for additional context tagging locations. It is
available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Hope this hasn't confused you. 8-)

Re: Undocking the Input Panel?

I use Firefox 90% of the time and it seems to me as though my little
floating TIP box often appears, although not always. As you say, it depends
on the program and in some instances I have to invoke the docked TIP at the
bottom of the screen.

What I was wondering was, if I did not automatically get the undocked TIP
box, if I could invoke it, in the way I invoke the docked one by clicking on
the little icon in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.

Per my last message, what do you think Jeff West, in that article, meant by
"double click the title bar" to undock the TIP? I can't figure out what the
hell he was talking about. Or maybe that is an old explanation and
everything has been superceded.

Re: Undocking the Input Panel?

I really don't know what he meant by that, Mack. He does occasionally read
this newsgroup, so maybe he will pop in with an answer.

Yes, you can invoke the anchored (Dock) TIP even though your Option may be
for Undock at any time, either by tapping the icon in the Taskbar or using
the Gesture over the icon. The only thing is once you bring it back to
Dock, you need to change it to Undock or else it will remain anchored in
whichever position (top or bottom of the screen) you've chosen.

Firefox, as I understand it, is not Ink aware. There was a third-party
program (http://tpctip.mozdev.org/index.html) for Firefox which supposedly
adds the context tagging. You might want to take a look at it.

I am not at my desktop and my tablet is in the house, across the yard,
blissfully hibernating, so I cannot readily check it, but I use Firefox
almost exclusively these days and also use the undocked TIP all the time.
There are just certain programs that do not allow it. So, I think Firefox
must have improved that situation lately. Perhaps someone else here knows.

Re: Undocking the Input Panel?

Please forgive me if I'm slightly off topic, but how do I go about undocking? The TIP always shows up docked, and it only shows up solely when I launch it from the TIP shortcut on the taskbar. When I click on "undock" the TIP closes. The little input panel never shows up anywhere. I remember it once did, but not anymore. I've looked through the options and it says "Show input panel next to text entry area when possible".

I'm using an HP TC4400 w/ Tablet PC Edition 2005 version 2002 SP2. Input Panel Version 1.7.2600.2663

Re: Undocking the Input Panel?

It is a different behavior with Tablet PC Edition 2005. There is a little
floating Tablet Input Panel icon which will appear on-screen only when your
cursor is in a text input area within a program like the address line in
Internet Explorer. The behavior you're seeing is correct.

In the TIP Options when you select Undock, the TIP disappears off-screen
until it needs to be invoked in a text input area. Then you will tap the
TIP icon and the input panel magically appears. Microsoft changed the
behavior after many complaints of the full TIP being in the way under the
original system.

Re: Undocking the Input Panel?

Curious...is there any way to have the TIP automatically appear in the docked bottom position each time Windows loads?

Our tablet does autologin, so I never see the TIP unless I click on the icon on the tray or hover above a text box.

And changed back to letting the tip stay open (after many more complaints)
