| OneNote 2003 Hi, I mainly use my TabletPC for a "paper block". I used MS Journal but soon I lost enjoyment of my new Tablet: After a little time, the fan began to be noisy, although I did not very much on my Tablet except writing and reading PDF. After some time, I saw that MS Journal Writer needs 100% (!!!!!) of the CPU while writing (fast). I could not imagine how such a "simple" operation (compared to others!) could waste whole CPU making my tablet very noisy and reducing battery life a loot. Then I found OneNote and was very happy that it just takes 30-40% of CPU while writing as fast as in JournalWriter. But I like the concept of JournalWriter more (just VERY simple, no useless things) and therefore I have a few questions how I could improve OneNote to be more like JournalWriter. 1.) The rubber is not accurate. I use the big one and want to clear anything thats under the square. In JournalWriter it worked, in OneNote not. Now I have to "move around" and then it can happen that things get erased that I don't wanted to be erased. 2.) Why are there so big grids in OneNote? Now I must always use the 50% view so that I have a grid thats as small as in JournalWriter. Is there any way to set the grid smaller then the smalltest (5mm) grid like on a real paper? And in 50% the lines from the pen are much finer than in 100% view. Is there a way to make them also as thin as in 50% view? 3.) Is it somehow possible to also print the grid? 4.) A very annoying "feature" is that OneNote automatically sets text mode. But I really don't need textmode, I just want to write with my stylus! So I have always to "re-select" the pen-icon to enter penmode. Also, after a few seconds, or when the Tablet enters standby the last "group" is marked. This is also VERY annoying! (it's possible to just disable text mode?) 5.) Is it possible to "fix" the header? The problem is that when I write in the first line I unintentionally resize the header. 6.) Scrolling is very cumbersomely: In JournalWriter I just could use "Page down" and I had a new sheet of "paper". I also could use arrows to scroll a just a little bit. This is great because the tablet has hardwarebuttons assigned to PG-UP, PG-DOWN, UP and DOWN. When I use the cursor keys in OneNote, OneNotes swichtes to textmode instead of just scrolling. Page UP/DOWN even does not work at all! How can i *simply* add a sheet of paper as I did in JournalWriter? ....Or is there a small hack for JournalWriter that it needs as less CPU as OneNote? Thank you very much in advance, Markus |

| Re: OneNote 2003 Markus, a lot of your questions/suggestions have already been aired in the OneNote public newsgroup: microsoft.public.onenote where the OneNote Team from Microsoft is quite active and various MVPs support the program. You might also want to view a demo (really wonderful and educational) on OneNote which is available here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/as...423061033.aspx I have gone back to it several times, and each time learn something more about OneNote I had no idea the program could do. And, for the record, Windows Journal is a simple, "this is how good Ink can be on a Tablet PC" program written primarily for everyone to use as a demo/beginner application. OneNote, although written for use both on a Tablet with Ink and a laptop/desktop without Ink, is a more advanced application. Especially with the OneNote SP1 version where Microsoft dumped the traditional "fix-bugs-only" approach and added more features in the update. Lastly, Windows Journal should not be taking 100% of the CPU at all. If you continue to have issues with it, there are several things we can try to fix the situation for you. -- Chris H.
