If you've tried to do a fresh install of windows on a toshiba tecra m4,
you'll notice that right after it says "Setup is inspecting your
computer's hardware configuration" the system hangs (the screen goes
blank and the computer does nothing). This is also described here:
http://www.jsifaq.com/SUBC/tip1000/rh1013.htm, but their solution does
nothing for you in this case.

The reason this happens is the computer needs CDROM Drivers that aren't
there.

The fix (I don't know if everything is necessary, but I could not get
it to work other ways and this is using the ACPI BIOS version 1.3):

1. copy over some cdrom driver files (I just copied all the drivers
from a windows 98SE OEM boot disk off from bootdisk.com) to a usb flash
drive. You do not have to do make the usb drive bootable.

2. plug the flash drive into the Tecra before booting

3. have the USB Memory BIOS Support Type = HDD in the BIOS. To get to
the BIOS settings hit ESC continually immediately after you turn on the
computer.

4. have the USB-FDD Legacy Emulation = Enabled in the BIOS

5. have HDD Priority = USB->___________->_____________ (just make USB
first)

6. Change the boot priority to CD-ROM first

7. It should work.


Now when the computer boots off the windows cd, it will get the part
where it is inspecting your computers hardware, the light on your
flashdrive will flash because it is looking for the cdrom drivers on
it, and then it will work like normal.

Note, you'll have to change the boot.ini in the c: so it all the rdisk
are 0 instead of rdisk(1). Using bartpe is probably the easiest way to
do this.

After you do that, change the bios settings back so it is set up to
boot off the hard drive again.

After doing this there are some issues one ought to be aware of.
Bigger issues: The screen will not rotate unless you use the toshiba
drivers. You will loose all bluetooth functionality as the Toshiba
Bluetooth stack for the tecra M4 does not work.
Minor issues: the wireless on light in the front won't come on. An
icon thats part of toshiba utilities won't show up when you use the
buttons attached to the monitor.

Sorry, the Tecra M4 may come with a bluetooth antenna, and drivers
preinstalled, and show a bluetooth device in device manager, but it
does not have bluetooth built in. you have to have their usb bluetooth
device PA3455U-1BTM to use bluetooth (or some type of bluetooth adapter
to plug into the tabletpc). So saying you'll loose bluetooth
functionality was wrong, it was never there to begin with. the best
part about the PA3455U-1BTM is that it is the first adapter I know of
in existance to use the Bluetooth v.2.0 specification as all the others
are v.1.2 or less.
