| Purchase a "padd" Hi all I've seen the site with the tablet comparisons. I've looked at various offers in the Internet. I'm interested in a "padd" (not a convertible) type of machine, and liked the look of the new Fujitsu. But I was talking to someone and was told that the machines from this company are unreliable and the service poor. He recommended HP. Does anyone have any experience with either company (or their new product lines)? Also, what kinds of "extras" are really necessary for a Tablet? For example, do I have to buy a battery charger, or will the battery charge when I'm plugged in (just like a laptop)? What about protective sheets? Anything else a "newbie" should know about? .. | Re: Purchase a "padd" Hi, Cindy, The Fujitsu is a nice Tablet. I've used a few of their models. You don't need a battery charger as it will charge when plugged in. Fujitsu is the only manufacturer that I've seen that suggests using protective sheets over the screen. As for the service, I haven't heard a lot of horror stories, but I'm not sure how they are overseas. I've seen some reviews of the Siemens and people seem to be pleased with them. The HP TC1100 has one of the most popular form factors. Now that some other manufacturers have added attachable keyboards, the choice is a bit broader. I don't know which companies sell in Europe. You have some available that we can't get and I'm sure the opposite is true, too. -- Terri Stratton Editor / Owner http://thetabletpc.net http://themediacenterpc.net Microsoft Featured Communities Microsoft Windows MVP - Tablet PC "Cindy Meister" <Cindy-M.@swissonline.ch> wrote in message news:FB2213BA-7367-4E10-926A-0CCB65C0A4FF@microsoft.com... > Hi all > > I've seen the site with the tablet comparisons. | Re: Purchase a "padd" Thanks, terri :-) A follow-up question, if I may: You mention "form factor" in relation to the HP. What do you mean by that? Just the way it looks? .. | Re: Purchase a "padd" Hi, Cindy, The HP TC1100 is the only "hybrid" Tablet on the market. Although others also have attachable keyboards that pretty much turn a Tablet into notebook style, the HP is the only one where the keyboard comes standard. Others, such as the Motion or the Electrovaya, are optional. What it all means is that you can use the slate just as a slate without carrying the keyboard around. It can be left at your desk or in a briefcase. It really cuts down on the weight. I don't know if you've seen the review I just did on the Motion LE1600, but you can see how it looks with the keyboard attached and unattached there. The HP page shows the hybrid. If screen size is a consideration, the HP is 10.4" and Fujitsu 5000 series comes in both 10.4 and 12.1" sizes. Also, if you'll be using it outside, both the Fujitsu and the HP have wide-angle viewing and the Fujitsu has an available indoor/outdoor screen. -- Terri Stratton Editor / Owner http://thetabletpc.net http://themediacenterpc.net Microsoft Featured Communities Microsoft Windows MVP - Tablet PC "Cindy Meister" <Cindy-M.@swissonline.ch> wrote in message news:FE3A639E-DF3F-488F-9AD2-C79C4D47C929@microsoft.com... > Thanks, terri :-) > > A follow-up question, if I may: > > You mention "form factor" in relation to the HP. | Re: Purchase a "padd" I just got my Fujitsu ST5020 yesterday, so I am not the one who will give you any reliability answers about Fujitsu -- but I did read a lot of reviews and ratings before I made a decision and it seemed to me that they were highly regarded. I do not recall seeing anything at all about Fujitsu having any particular problems with quality or service. In fact, Fujuitsu makes a big deal of the fact that their tablets and laptops are built by them (mine came from Osaka, Japan), not outsourced to China as most are. As for service, I have had occasion to call them a couple of times -- to order an accessory (a bump case) and then make arrangements to send it back. (Didn't like it, obviously.) This morning, Saturday, the people at Fujitsu who would give me an RA number were not in, but a support tech picked up the phone in under a minute. He was very pleasant, ready to help and, btw, sounded like he was from California, not Bangladore. The other person I talked to there a few days ago was equally friendly, helpful -- and picked up the phone immediately. And btw, my tablet seems (knock on wood) to be exactly as ordered with no quality problems whatsoever, right out of the box. If a true, thin, beautiful slate is what you want, check out the ST5020. I got mine from Tiger. They're expensive but, so far, seem worth it. I put the protective sheet on the screen, just as Fujitsu wanted me to do, before I even booted it up. I see no problem at all with it and I like the security of knowing it's on there. mack austin "Cindy Meister" <Cindy-M.@swissonline.ch> wrote in message news:FB2213BA-7367-4E10-926A-0CCB65C0A4FF@microsoft.com... > Hi all > > I've seen the site with the tablet comparisons. | Re: Purchase a "padd" Hi Mack Thanks for sharing your experiences :-) Still haven't made up my mind, yet, but I'm slowly getting there!
