| Entry Level Recommendations A TabletPC Newbie Wannbe here... I was wanting to know some opinions on some of the older TabletPC's to get started. While the new ones are wonderful, the $1500+ pricetag is a deal killer. I was thinking about testing the waters with an eBay special.. I am a software developer, but attend a lot of meetings. This would be a "Meeting" pc that would primarily be used for OneNote integration (which I use now). Occasional PowerPoint demos and things like that. I have seen the Compaq TC1000 on ebay at sub $1000, which makes it appealing. So, can I get some group recommendations on entry level? I would probably want the 10" display.. Is there twice as much difference in the new models? Should I wait for price decreases instead? Thanks. Larry |

| Re: Entry Level Recommendations I was in the exact same boat as you a couple months ago. I went the same route and picked up an Acer C100 for $450 on ebay! It has the 10" display and is so small and light that it is wonderful. I have the onenote installed and that is what I use in all of my meetings to take my notes on. | Re: Entry Level Recommendations I would recommend very serious looking at your options, and without full guarantees of your purchase to avoid Ebay. Too many people have purchased a Tablet PC supposedly "used" through that web system, and then not received the OEM CD/DVD recovery disks to be able to reinstall the software. Unless that comes with the purchase, I would not buy from that source. The OEM has no obligation to provide you recovery media when you buy from a third party, and there is no regular user retail outlet to purchase them. You might also search around a bit. I've seen the Averatec on sale occasionally at some places like www.SaveAtEagle.com for less than $900 (refurbished). At least with a refurbished Tablet, you know what you're getting and the company from which your purchasing. -- Chris H. | Re: Entry Level Recommendations While I agree with Chris about making sure you get the recovery discs, I purchased my first tablet on eBay, to test it out and see if I would really use it the way I thought I would. I found an Acer C100 with all materials. I have the box, the packing, the manuals, and the discs. If the auction doesn't say expressly that recovery discs are included (not back-ups, or a back up of the hard drive) then it isn't worth it. But, mine was just under $1000 over a year ago, and it has been doing great ever since. I even got the SmartCard Security Cards, too. eBay has protection for you on purchases, as long as you find one that states what is and is not included. | Re: Entry Level Recommendations I can't recommend the Averatec due to very low battery life, getting so hot you cannot hold it in your hands. A new 14' Acer C300 is not an option for you? It's a bit heavy and the display is not best, but you may want to give it a look. -- Mit besten Grüßen Best wishes Stefen Niemeyer "Chris H." <winxpnews********.com> schrieb im Newsbeitrag news:uMlB5fhXFHA.1240@TK2MSFTNGP14.phx.gbl... >I would recommend very serious looking at your options, and without full >guarantees of your purchase to avoid Ebay. | Re: Entry Level Recommendations BEEE VERY CAREFUL With buying tablets on E-bay. Most people probably will not sell the oem disks that come with it. Make sure it states it comes with the disks. I don't want to see you get screwed with buying a tablet then not being able to reinstall windows if something horrible happens. -James "Ree-Yees" <r@r.com> wrote in message news:5uOdncdqVNrR3BLfRVn-pA@comcast.com... >I was in the exact same boat as you a couple months ago. | Re: Entry Level Recommendations There have been reports of eBay tablet buyers even receiving their tablet without both recovery CD disk sets AND having the serial number sticker on the bottom scratched away. The tablet is rendered literally worth nothing in that state. Microsoft does NOT sell Tablet XP OS to anyone and no manufacturer will sell recovery CD's without a serial number. For $1,000 one can very easily find a warrantied reburbished tablet with a Google search. |

| Re: Entry Level Recommendations Manufacturer will not always sell the discs with the serial number. Mine came from ebay and the guy did not have the discs (it was stated in the auction). Since the Acer C100 is so old, Acer would not sell me the discs even though I have the hologram sticker on the bottom! I just made a backup of the drive and its running fine. I also saved a fortune. --C "bmhome1" <bmhome1@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:D27A88A5-7D87-4FCC-99E9-2774644C0D4E@microsoft.com... > > > There have been reports of eBay tablet buyers even receiving their tablet > without both recovery CD disk sets AND having the serial number sticker on > the bottom scratched away. | RE: Entry Level Recommendations I purchased a refurbished Fujitsu T3010 from the Fujitsu-Siemens website for #1100. It came with a 90 day warranty, full tech support, and an option to extend the warranty. Tech support has been wonderful to work with and I still have two months remaining on the basic warranty. | Re: Entry Level Recommendations You might want to think hard before buying a TC1000. It uses Finepoint pen technology, not Wacom. The pen also uses a battery, unlike most other Tablets. The TC1000 is very slow compared to other first generation Tablets. Please note that this is only true of the TC1000. The 1100 is a great machine! If you want to check specs of earlier Tablets, you might want to take a look at http://thetabletpc.net/comparison.htm. You'll find a listing of all available machines as well as an archive page comparing the older models. You might also want to be aware that the Acer C100 has only 256Mb of ram and can't be upgraded to more. Regardless of what you find, make sure that you get the recovery media with the Tablet or you could be buying a very expensive box.
