Screen protector or not?

Im new to the tablet pc world and I have been writing lightly on my Acer
C100 with no scratches yet. Do all of you purchase screen protectors or are
the screens tough enough?

With my old PPC, I got scratches on the screen real easy so I had to get the
protectors.

Also, if I need to get them, can you pick them up at the local Best buy or
Compusa?

Thanks!

Re: Screen protector or not?

Tablet PCs are different than the touch-screen setups. Personally, I don't
use a screen protector, just going with the plain screen. I believe one of
the Tablets (maybe a Fujitsu) came with a protector installed, and it came
off within the first hour or so.

Hi Cameron - I bought a screen protector (online) for my Tablet PC and it was a bit on the spendy side (like $70 after tax, shipping, etc). We buy screen protectors for most devices like pocket PC, Sony PSP, Nintendo DS, etc. The screen is the most important part of these devices so no sense taking changes scratching them all up.

Putting these protectors on can be tricky, though, so you don't get dust beneath them. I wasn't able to find these protectors at any retailers, so prepare to go online. Details here: http://www.makeyougohmm.com/20050213/1455/

Re: Screen protector or not?

Honestly, I use one. For my Gateway M275 the screen got scratched once...
and I got it fixed... so now i use something...
You can go to office depot and get projector overheads "slides" and these
should fit, if not cut them down to the right size.... sooo much cheaper
than any screen protector you can buy.
They do scratch, but are easily replaced.

Re: Screen protector or not?

How do you attach the overhead projector sheet? Does it just stick from
static electricity?

The screens are tough enough, it is rigid plastics or glass that stands
up to normal use i.e. the pen tip (and metal wristwatch bands...). It's
not even remotely the kind of thin and flexing touchscreen foil as on PPCs.

You can add a protective screen but IMHO it makes writing with the pen
less "slick" as it would on the 'glass'. At least it does protect in
case you mistakenly pick up the wrong pen... ;-)

WriteRight is a series of anti-glare protective foils and sticks with
electrostatic force. There are probably many other brands, too. Btw,
some of the "scratches" are actually just grooves left by the pen in the
grease (*yucky* ;-)) that will accumulate on the screen after longer
use. Wiping with optical cloth and no water or solvents should "fix" these.

cheers,
- Jan

Re: Screen protector or not?

The screens are durable enough to stand up to writing, wrong pens, watches
etc. The only scratch I got was from wiping dust of the screen with the
back of my left hand. I'm right handed and had the pen in my right hand and
the diamonds in my wedding band on my left hand caused the scratch.

Re: Screen protector or not?

Either Static Electricity, or you can get a light adhesive... or I just do a
warm puff of moist air (breath) and it'll stick, but once you take it off,
you'll need to clean the screen... you have no idea what kind of crap is in
your breath ;-)

I bought myself a fujitsu T4010 and i got myself screen protectors just in case. They came without instructions so it took some time to figure it out.
The protector had 2 blue sheets covering it. After peeling off 1 side, I noticed I could stick it to the display. very easy and months later it is still stuck fine. I removed the other blue side and indeed the surface of the protector is not so smooth. I had to get use to it compared to the smooth display itself. When I look at the protector I notice one big dent and am happy I have a protector... So I think it is wise to use the protector slides.
