Weird standby and hibernation problem on Motion Tablet PC

I recently bought a Motion M1400 Tablet PC and I'm having some problems with
regards to standby and hibernation.

When the tablet is running on battery, I cannot seem to get it to
automatically standby and/or hibernate according to my Power Options
settings. For example, if I standby manually, the tablet stays in standby
even though I have a hibernation timeout set. I also find that the system
won't hibernate automatically when the system is in standby and the battery
gets low. There are no errors or messages in the Event Log for either of
these situations.

I can manually standby and hibernate and the system will hibernate
automatically when the battery is low if I'm using the tablet. The tablet
also correctly goes into standby and hibernation according to the Power
Options when connected to AC power. The problems only seem to happen when
the tablet is running on battery power.

Has anyone else had a similar problem in Windows or on a Tablet PC? If so,
what could be causing it and how do I fix it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this problem is really annoying at
the moment.

Thanks,
Mark

Re: Weird standby and hibernation problem on Motion Tablet PC

Since you're running a Tablet PC, I have trimmed the cross-posting to the
other newsgroups.

When you're in Standby, the machine is using whatever power it has to
maintain the position you had when you went into Standby. Windows XP does
not write any files to the hard drive, so, say you've been preparing a
report for two hours, and need to go into Standby. But it won't. In
effect, it is prompting you to either save what you've been doing and
shutting down, or going into Hibernation because Hibernating writes to the
hard drive and then shuts down all power.

If you do force Standby while low on battery, and your battery goes dead you
will lose all your work because it isn't saved yet. If you're in Standby,
it will not come out of that position until you manually do that, therefore
you will not have automatic Hibernation.

I believe the situations you're seeing at normal, whether on a Tablet PC or
a laptop while in battery operation. There has been a lot of thought put
into battery usage, like you cannot install a lot of programs while on
battery, so as to prevent aborted or truncated installs.

I am SOOOOOOOOOOO not the person to ask BUT I have an idea... I'd type this
message again with a PING TERRI in front of it ;) But, really.... Go ahead
and head to the Motion site or use the Windows Update site (not automatic
updates as that only gets critical updates) and look for new ACPI software.
I just recently got another Motion and it's fully updated and I don't THINK
it has that problem as it's gone into hibernation mode on it's own already a
few times and I'm 90% sure it was on battery at that time. I'd say that's an
ACPI function and I'd look for updates for that specifically.

Re: Weird standby and hibernation problem on Motion Tablet PC

That doesn't seem right. If I have configured my power options so that the
system goes into standby after being idle 5 minutes and then hibernates
after being idle for 10 minutes, then when I'm not running anything or using
the tablet, Windows should place it in standby after 5 minutes and
automatically wake it and cause it to hibernate after another 5 minutes
(assuming it hasn't be woken up since). This is the behaviour I see when I'm
using AC power on the tablet and on my other laptop (Dell Insprion 8600)
when running on battery.

I'm forcing a hibernation on low battery and this works correctly when I'm
actually using the tablet (i.e. I get a low battery warning from Windows and
then the system hibernates). It doesn't work though when the tablet is in
standby which once again works on my other laptop.

If anything the transition between the various sleep modes should work on
battery as the machine is ACPI compliant and I've tested the ability to wake
from Standby using Sleeper and indeed can see it waking from standby to
hibernate when it is running on AC power (done by setting the standby
timeout to 1 minute and hibernation to 2 minutes).

The problem I'm having is that I would like the tablet to be able to be put
in standby by its switch so that if I need to use it soon after it starts up
quickly (and saves on hard disk writes) but if don't end up using it for a
while, it goes to the next stage which is hibernation so that the battery
power is saved. Windows power management is meant to support this.

What I'm finding is that it won't automatically do the standby and/or
hibernation so I'm ending up with a flat battery.

Unfortunately I already have all the updates from Windows Update installed
and all the latest version of the software and BIOS (A04) from the Motion

Thanks any way

Re: Weird standby and hibernation problem on Motion Tablet PC

Since the bios controls the operation for standby ( i belive) its the bios
itself that has the ability to return to windows when the hibernate
operation is called.
Though, when in standby, the computer, and windows are essentially asleep.
So windows has no idea what time it even is, nor the ability to call
hibernate.
Depending on the ACPI dlls (I belive, again) the power save is either a
function of windows, or the bios. So if the bios has the ability to tell
windows, go into hibernate, then it can wake itself from the standby and
hibernate. If the bios doesnt, well back to the fact windows is sleeping!
So saying that your other computer can do it, and the tablet can't means
that the tablet cant because the maker decided to be cheap in the bios and
not add that ability. (I have seen motions and i'm not saying that they are
cheap! or cheaply made!!!!)
Hope that helps you understand?

-James

Re: Weird standby and hibernation problem on Motion Tablet PC

The tablet does support it.

Just found what the problem was. Turned out it was the video driver of all
things. The tablet has an Intel 852/855 graphics controller and I had
installed the latest drivers (14.11). Downgraded to an earlier version
(14.9) and now it's working fine. Very annoying though....who would have
thought the graphics drivers would be the issue???

Thanks everyone for your help.

Re: Weird standby and hibernation problem on Motion Tablet PC

Did you obtain this driver off the Motion Computing site or elsewhere, Mark?
If it came from Motion, I would drop an email or call their Support section
to let them know. Most Tablet PCs are pretty sensitive to their drivers
(custom, if you will). Even NVIDIA has a blurb on their web site for the
GeForce FX Go5200 users to use the OEM drivers and not their driver. The
latest batch even refuses to install on a Tablet. 8-)
