dwwin errors on m200

I've been getting a bunch of dwwin.exe errors under relatively high memory
consumption periods (in my case usually about 60-70% of physical memory)
usually with an indication that the fault is in nview.dll, the Nvidea
driver. I've updated to the most recent drivers on the Toshiba site and the
problem continues. It doesn't seem tied to any given application. Anyone
seen anything like this on the M200?

Thanks

Re: dwwin errors on m200

Where is this "dwwin" file located, Otto? I don't seem to have one on my
M200. If you could find that specific and determine what problem it is
related to, perhaps we'll have a clue.

Re: dwwin errors on m200

dwwin.exe is part of Microsoft Error Reporting, I think the replacement for
Dr. Watson, located on my Tablet PC 2005 box in \windows\system32. The
error though seems to appear in various applications, always with a fault
indicated in nview.dll. I've turned down some of the Nvidea optimizations
to see if that helps. Initially, I had 1.2 GB of RAM and moved to 2 GB.
The problem isn't as frequent now but still requires a hard shutdown when it
happens, so I'm anxious to solve it before I end up corrupting the registry
with the ragged restarts.

thanks

There it is! 8-) Is your version 10.0.5815? Which version of the NVIDIA
drivers are you running?

Re: dwwin errors on m200

Yep, that's the dwwin.exe version. The Nvidea driver version is 4.6.4.4,
4/15/04, from the driver version tab. On the Toshiba site, the driver is
listed as

09-21-2004
Windows XP SP1/SP2 Display Driver for nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 (v46.44;
08-31-2004; 13.05M)

Bios is version 1.60.

Again, it seems to only happen at times of some memory pressure but even
this isn't quite right because I put together a little test app and have run
allocated memory all the way up to just under 2 GB without getting the error
that way. The error has shown up in VS.Net, Acrobat, Office--and it's
sometimes contageous, so if one app crashes in that fashion, others may
follow.

Something identified as "Fault bucket 188957829" also shows up in the event
log but I'm not able to find anything in the MS Knowledge Base about this.

Re: dwwin errors on m200

I've got no idea how to read fault buckets either. 8-) How about trying to
reinstall the Nvida drivers, but do it in Safe Mode so nothing at all is
running. Since the error seems to implicate a portion of the display
(nview) perhaps that would correct any corrupt portion.

Re: dwwin errors on m200

The fault bucket is a hash of the error information, and is submitted to the
MS Error Reporting site. Then there's a lookup in a database to see if the
hash already exists, and if there's a solution. If so, you are presented
with the solution. That's my understanding of the fault bucket value anyway.

What is the exact error you are getting?

Cheers
Ken

Re: dwwin errors on m200

From the event log:

Faulting application acrord32.exe, version 7.0.0.0, faulting module
nview.dll, version 6.14.10.4644, fault address 0x0001dd93.

and

Fault bucket 188957829.

I've submitted the error but by that time the machine is so hosed up (with
100% utilization) that I'm not sure anything ever returned....

Re: dwwin errors on m200

The acrord32.exe file is an Adobe Reader file, mentioned in lots of search
results in Google searches, but also as part of the W32.Bugbear.M@mm
mass-mailing worm described here:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com...bear.m@mm.html
I would follow up first on the possible virus problem, then if you're clear,
try uninstalling the Reader to see if you still have the same errors.
