I have a Toshiba tablet PC R -15, with Works 8 pre-installed. I can't get
the
undocked icon for text entry to appear in the workspace for Works Word.
The icon shows up when I point the pen anywhere else-like at the window to
change the font. No other problems with text entry. It looks to me like
the program
bas been intentionally hobbled to got me to buy the Office Suite 2003 which
I just
don't need.

Does anybody know a fix for this? Maybe a switch in the registry?

Try going to Control Panel/Regional and Language Options/Languages tab, then
the Details button. Make sure there is a check mark in "Extend support of
advanced text services to all programs."

Thing is the test entry is working fine for everything else but MS Works
workspace where the test entry window will work but not come undocked.

I talked to Toshiba and Microsoft about this and nobody can tell me that
it should work. I am hoping that it will. Programs like Notepad and
WordPad work fine so I imagine that Works should work too. You will make
me a very man if we can make this work. I am disabled and very much need
this
functionality.

Other programs working as expect doesn't mean certain ones will. I've been
trying to get confirmation that Works is actually Ink aware. The program
itself does need to identify itself with context sensitive coding as a text
input area. If it doesn't already, perhaps we need a service pack for Works
to enable it if Microsoft wants to support that function. I'll let you know
if I hear anything.

I mean to say - that Works 8 spreadsheet allows the text entry
window icon to undock and permit individual cells to except
input and also anyway where else you would expect to be able
to do this in the entire Works package but not on the word
processor page. Doesn't this mean that the program Microsoft
Works 8 is ink aware? And that it is context aware in all but this
one place?

I purchased this Toshiba tablet PC package because It came bundled
with Works 8. The suggestion IS that it is ink aware. Was I being baited?
I don't know. It was also very difficult to find out that OneNote will only
work with the latest MS office Suite and not Office 2000. No one
seemed anxious to tell me that either. I feel I am being herded towards
buying the latest MS office suite. My first mission is a technical one.

They're investigating, Ernie. I don't use Works here, so I'm not sure
exactly. There may be a section of it that isn't, just like some of Office
2003 wasn't until the Office 2003 Tablet PC Update was issued last December.
Can you use the Tablet Input Panel in Docked position to convert input, or
not at all?

It is possible to dock the input panel at the bottom of
the screen or the top but I need to steady my hand (more
than most) and find using the top of the screen is just
generally awkward for me. The handwriting to text
feature is not just a luxury for me it is a necessity,
even though it is extra difficult for me to use. I don't
meant to sound so negative. The tablet pc has really
improved my quality of life (I am in bed most of the
time). My ability to use email and scan the internet
has greatly improved my quality of life. I just wish
Microsoft had a program that made allowances for
the disabled. In the case of these tablet PC's, many
of us are a sure market. I think they should be more
eager to listen and support us for the feedback we
can provide.

I can use WordPad for now. I need to find a third party
spell checker add-on for it. That would do it for me
about 85%. OneNote is a great product but I can't
email from it and so I can't use it much without getting
a charitable donation in the form of a copy of Outlook.
Kind of wish I never saw it at this point. I learned to like
it before I found out I couldn't afford it - never any fun.

Thanks Chris. I hope we find out something here. I
learn a lot following and reading your posts. I used
to be a tech. and gotta know how things work. Just
can't kick the habit.

Sorry, Ernie. I seem to have missed your post from yesterday for some
reason. Have you tried using Windows Journal on the Tablet PC? It might be
a good alternative for you, for at least ease of use, because there is a
Send to Email Recipient option on the File menu, offering choices of a
Journal note for people with the Journal Viewer, Web page (can be read in
Internet Explored 5.0 and later) and a black and white .tif image. And you
could also Copy/Paste your Ink directly into an email program like Outlook
Express.

And you might also want to look at the Tablet Experience Pack
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en)
which includes the Ink Desktop for easy note-taking. Before installing,
take a look in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Experience Pack directory for
the readme.htm file which has removal notices on certain portions (like the
first verison of the Snipping Tool) before installing the newer one.

Thanks for the suggestions Chris. I have used the Windows Journal
and emailed from it successfully, - all a bit circumspect - I will
wait awhile to see if we can get Works 8 Word working. Then, I
may post to let others know about my experience with this purchase.
If I had turned on the trial versions of Microsoft Office on my
new pc I wouldn't have been in trouble until due date was
up and than I could have been invested in a project with OneNote
that would have made purchasing the latest version of Microsoft
Office necessary and painful - without seeing it coming. Someone
else might justifiably see it differently, but for me the name of the
game would be "Gotcha".

I don't believe there was any "ploy" intentional or otherwise with the
package you selected with your purchase, Ernie. We need to be aware that
perhaps not all programs are Ink-aware at this point because the Tablet PCs
are still new, but I do know Microsoft is looking into your specific
instance with Works 8.

Remember, the Tablet PCs came out in 2002, and even the complete Office XP
wasn't Ink-aware. Microsoft had to come up with the add-on pack to make it
at least functional. Office 2003 had built-in Ink, but then they discovered
additional spots for context tagging (waving the flag to the Tablet Input
Panel) they created another add-on pack. 8-)
