Portege M200 and boot options

I'm seeing loads of conflicting information over this, the main reason
being - if and when I need to reinstall Windows (there's a slim chance I'll
ever buy a drive for this thing).

Some people say you can install Windows over a network, some people say you
can't. Some people say you can only install Windows with Toshiba's own
DVD/CD drive, and other generic USB driver won't work. And some people say
you can install Windows with an SD card (awesome).

What's true and what tools would be needed?

Thanks guys.

Re: Portege M200 and boot options

Paul, I've got the Targus DVD for my M200, specifically for some of the
reasons you've mentioned. I use Acronis True Image for my back-up images,
stored on a second partition of the Tablet PC hard drive and on one of the
LAN machines for duplication. The Toshiba M200 BIOS does allow you to
boot/install from either another LAN computer or an external USB device, if
enabled.

If prefer having a known good device available for installs of software
which won't work over the LAN. 8-)

RE: Portege M200 and boot options

I have an m200, and i bought a generic ext. drive. Its cheap and suprisingly
useful, i lend it to friends to burn etc. Truth is i dont know how i could
have installed without it. Many programs check the disk volume of which they
are installing off or they will refuse to burn... i say get a cheap one of
ebay.

hope that helps

cheers

Re: Portege M200 and boot options

I would recommend looking in the direction of quality versus
availability/cheapness, Paul. Check the documentation with your unit when
you receive it, check the OEM's web site for recommendations and then make
the decision. Just any generic drive may not work.

Re: Portege M200 and boot options

The Portege M200 has drivers for some external optical devices built into
the machine's ROM. You will need a compatible PC-Card/PCMCIA or USB drive
for this to work. Otherwise, you'll need to boot off a floppy disk or
SD-Card (e.g. to MS DOS) and load your own USB drivers.

Otherwise, you can definately install of the network using PXE-boot. You'll
need an appropriate DHCP and TFTP server running on the network for this to
work. I've used the instructions at this site to get this all working:

Cheers
Ken

Re: Portege M200 and boot options

PS, I have a Targus Noteworthy optical drive that the Toshiba is happy to
boot off. There's a list of optical drives that users have found compatible
with the M200 over at the TabletPCBuzz.com forums (it's one of the pinned
threads in the Toshiba forums)

Cheers

As long as it wasn't the dodgy one I just saw go on ebay.co.uk the day
before yesterday - I did inform ebay, but it seems like they aren;t that
bothered
