| Tablet Newbie -- and AOL hell Hi all, Are there any known incompatibilities with AOL Instant Messenger and tablets? (Or other software?) I just got an Averatech C3500 and AIM hangs on startup, to the point where you get "program not responding" dialogs on shutdown. I had it working, and then did the eggregious: I installed Office 2003. It appears I've put the cart before the horse. Since I don't actually have anything invested in this machine yet (other than hours installing stuff), I'm willing to re-image it from scratch. Just wondering if others have seen this. Thanks! Dan |

| Re: Tablet Newbie -- and AOL hell Shouldn't be any problems at all, Dan, because the Tablet PCs run Windows XP Pro as the operating system. As with any installation, I would make sure you don't have your anti-virus software active (if it is McAfee, Norton or Symantec, they don't quit when you "exit" from the Systray icon) and no other programs open. I'd suggest making sure nothing is running (even temporarily uninstall your AV program to make sure) and then try the installation again. There is no specific order in which software needs to be installed, but we can take precautions to make sure nothing interferes. -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol Chris H. | Re: Tablet Newbie -- and AOL hell The problem has to do with default applications. Here's a solution I posted back in February: Jim Feb 22, 7:44 pm show options Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windows.tabletpc From: "Jim" <jnba...******.com> - Find messages by this author Date: 22 Feb 2005 19:44:17 -0800 Local: Tues,Feb 22 2005 7:44 pm Subject: Re: AIM not running Reply to Author | Forward | Print | Individual Message | Show original | Remove | Report Abuse I got a clue from a previous post on this subject. It took me a few trys, but here's what worked for me. * Reboot - we don't want the AIM to be half running * click START - run Set Program Access and Defaults * to the right of the custom radio button, select the down arrows to open * scroll down to Default IM program * there are radio button to select the default (AIM, Trillion, Messenger, etc) - it doesn't seem to matter which one you select * to the right of the radio buttons are check boxes to enable access - make sure you put check marks on all the ones you want to use. * click OK at the bottom of the screen - windows will take a couple of minutes setting up defaults * RUN AIM - it should work for you now.
