| folder dates: modification, sorting, inefficiency This is perhaps a more generic WinXP question, but it "gets me" the most = when I'm using the tablet, with less screen space than other monitors. I = am=20 forever scrolling around looking for things among cascaded windows or=20 too-small-windows. When I sort a window by the modification date column, is there __any__ = way=20 to get Windows to acknowledge that something __inside__ a folder was=20 modified more recently than the folder creation date (without opening = the=20 folders or laboriously checking property sheets)? ---or that the folder = is=20 newer than the contents?=20 I receive a lot of files from others, so I don't always know the = specifics of I'm=20 looking for, such a name of file, or file format. And many times they = are not=20 at all careful to send me only what is the final version. (Along with, I = often=20 get copies, save-as documents, and related files that weren't actually=20 included in the final version.) Having spent so many years in the Mac environment, as well, I am=20 continually aggravated by the difference between platforms in the file = dating=20 default process. Within the MacOS, when I copy a file from a Mac to the=20 server, it does not get a new date, just because I copied it. But in = WinXP, I=20 usually end up having to copy files enclosed in folders to prevent this = from=20 happening. So when I sort by date, I get a folder date sort instead of a = contents sort. Any ideas are welcome! |

| Re: folder dates: modification, sorting, inefficiency There are several choices available (View/Details) when viewing folders or files in Windows Explorer, including Date Modified, Date Created and Date Accessed - all of which can be used at the same time for comparison. Perhaps you haven't covered all the available selections? -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol Chris H. | Re: folder dates: modification, sorting, inefficiency I appreciate these suggestions; I am aware of these other options.=20 But actually, I think these choices are more of the problem than a = solution. | Re: folder dates: modification, sorting, inefficiency I dont know how the mac file system works but thats just a waste of extra bits in the fat (how ever it's own alication table works..) And thats where it would probably be! So to answer your question no.. windows does not save other data like that in the fat... (that I know of)... and if you download the file anyway, that info isnt going to stay with the file. so I dont want this to sound as rude or blunt as it may... but deal with it... thats just not somthing the FAT32 nor NTFS (as far as i know) saves with the file info... -James "romy" <anonymous@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:07b101c54481$c19c19b0$a501280a@phx.gbl... | Re: folder dates: modification, sorting, inefficiency Unfortunately, I don't believe there's a way on XP beyond the choices I mentioned, Romy. You may want to ask in one of the Windows XP newsgroups, however, you mentioned a server so you may be talking about a different animal. If you are storing files on a server, then perhaps there's a different tracking system or perhaps the server is set up differently. -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol Chris H.
