Re: Desktop turned orange after Ink Desktop

Mickey, I believe we've talked before, but which graphics drivers are you
using? Have you tried reinstalling the latest ones again, and used Safe
Mode for the process, since installing the Experience Pack? I'm just
curious if that might kick the display in the tail for you.

Re: Desktop turned orange after Ink Desktop

I have Wacom serial pen tablet driver version 5.1.2600.2180. I'm not sure
how to check whether than is current other than trying to update
automatically.

Re: Desktop turned orange after Ink Desktop

That's not the graphics driver, Mickey. 8-) In Device Manager, my Wacom
Penabled HID MiniDriver is listed as:
Provider: Wacom
Driver Date: 11/16/2004
Driver Version: 2.3.0.0

I've got a M200 on my lap right now, and for the Display adapter in Device
Manager, it shows:
NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 32M/64M
with:
Provider: NVIDIA
Driver Date: 4/15/2004
Driver Version: 4.6.44

Even if you have these showing, you can reinstall those drivers again in
Safe Mode. It won't do any harm. In Safe Mode, only "generic" drivers are
loaded, and the method of installing new (or the same, in case of
corruption) ones has nothing to interfere with the installation (including
no AV program running).

Re: Desktop turned orange after Ink Desktop

Okay, that's the original for the Motion 1300 (still the only one), although
the 5-27-03 version on Motion's site is listed as 6.13.01.3510. You might
try downloading that one fresh
(http://www.motioncomputing.com/suppo...nload_1300.asp) and do a
reinstall with the fresh download in Safe Mode.

The 4.82-9a Wacom driver, updated last December, is available for download
here: http://www.wacom.com/tabletpc/driver.cfm .

One of the reasons I recommend reinstalling the newer drivers (or
reinstalling the only available ones) in Safe Mode is that XP SP2 make a
huge amount of changes in the Registry when we updated to that, and not all
drivers reacted properly after coming through the upgrade.

Re: Desktop turned orange after Ink Desktop

I'm always nervous about fiddling around with drivers and safe mode.

I wonder if something time-dependent in the boot process accounts for the
delay, for example logging into our wireless network.

Another approach is not to use Ink Desktop until Microsoft gets it working
properly. From the various references in the documentation to the orange
screen it is clear they are talking their way around a glitch, but I don't
know enough to know why this was nontrivial to fix.

Re: Desktop turned orange after Ink Desktop

Safe Mode is what it implies - safety. What it does is remove unnecessary
items from possibly interfering with the clean installation of the driver.
It gives us the best possible method of installing a new driver. You don't
need to worry about the network being on at all, because you don't need it.
Safe Mode offers whether you want networking or not. Since you don't need
to do anything on the LAN so unless you're getting your file from a
different machine, select Without Networking.

Remember, Windows XP is much different from perhaps one of the Windows 9x
operating systems. In Device Manager, there's Roll Back Driver, which is a
safety net (in addition to System Restore) for moving to a previously good
driver, in case a "beta version" one goes belly up.

Mickey, my thinking is if you haven't tried reinstalling the drivers, you
don't know if there's a bit of corruption in there which might be fixed. If
it doesn't fix the issue, then at least we'll know the drivers are very good
for your system, and there's something else amiss. Then you can go to the
"wait" mode. 8-)

Re: Desktop turned orange after Ink Desktop

It has nothing to do with graphics drivers. As Victoria has pointed out,
it's an artifact of using Active Desktop. Whilst your desktop is refreshing,
you will see the orange screen. Once Ink Desktop is fully loaded, the orange
screen will be replaced with your ink notes. How long the orange screen will
be there depends on the performance of your Tablet, and how many other
things happen to be loading.

Cheers
Ken

That is why I was hoping to influence startup order. Sometimes the orange
screen is only there momentarily, possibly due to a different order of
things starting up.

Re: Desktop turned orange after Ink Desktop

I've never seen an orange screen here, Ken, on my Motion 1300, which is one
of the reasons I suggested checking the drivers. But I also reinstalled the
drivers after updating to XP SP2 and the Tablet PC Edition 2005.

Re: Desktop turned orange after Ink Desktop

I'm not entirely sure you can influence this. As I understand Ink Desktop,
it's just a type of Active Desktop (Active Desktop is a bit like setting
your desktop wallpaper), so the initialisation process is part of
initialising your desktop.

Cheers
Ken
