| New small-form factor Tablet afoot My educated best guess, small-form factor Tablet slash eBook device, as I hear rumors of prototypes floating all around MSFT. No OEMs yet tho. And I have horrible memories of MS hyping up products that never have a decent payoff. But let's hope. Kinda eBookish, small Tablet PCish. Amateur detectives? I hate when they tease people like this, and then go crazy once I do find out, Lonestar redux. But the game is afoot. =) Wonder if Conrad knows this? :) ---------- http://blogs.msdn.com/evanf/archive/...03/405083.aspx In other news, the moment of truth came and went... I was part of a small group of people who had a concept presented at the Executive Retreat a couple of weeks ago. The feedback that we got from the execs was to go ahead and build it. So this upcoming week a few people will be shopping around the concept to the OEMs and if one of them (or more decides to build it) we've got a new and interesting product to put together. For all those amateur detectives out there, read my blog and maybe you'll puzzle out what the concept is or maybe not. At least it's as entertaining as keeping up with what ever the latest Apple rumors are :-) |

| Re: New small-form factor Tablet afoot Need Proof? :) http://abcnews.go.com/WNT/story?id=506354&page=2 GATES: I am meeting with our tablet people about the idea of carrying text books around. They'll have just a tablet device that they can call up the material on. That's been a dream for a long time, we're making progress there. So review of the software projects and encouraging them in terms of what they are doing well and telling them who else they need to work with. That's the primary thing on my schedule. |

| Re: New small-form factor Tablet afoot Some manufacturers have done 8.4in slate Tablet's before - however, to pack a machine in that small a form factor they've tended to go for slow processors. I reviewed a machine like that for PC Pro magazine last year (http://www.pcpro.co.uk/labs/63465/ec...let-ez30d.html) and wasn't impressed. |

| Re: New small-form factor Tablet afoot It is amazing how close one can get to a good product and mess up because of a bad choice such as a slow processor. | Re: New small-form factor Tablet afoot You may want to take another look at the 8.4" tablet! Redesigned and marketed by Advueu Corporation, the V800XPT-2 now has 512MB ram, 40GB hard drive and runs Windows XP Tablet Edition 2005 with eaze. The 800MHZ Transmeta Crusoe processor is not the fastest on the market but is one of the lowest power consumers. This combined with with a larger battery gives 6 hours of continuous operation on battery power! The small form factor make this the most portable tablet on the market. The V800XPT-2 is powerful enough to run Adobe Photoshop CS. Unlike the Intel Processor based computers that I have previously owned, the Advueu has fuctioned flawlessly with no BSOD. priced at under $1000. This tablet is worth another look. > > > |

| Re: New small-form factor Tablet afoot The extra RAM could explain the improvement you describe. The links from http://www.advueu.com/003/productitem.php?id=51 suggest that people in the US can see the computer at stores such as CompUSA, but I don't see it listed when searching on the web sites of CompUSA or TigerDirect, the only outlets I tried from Advueu's "where to buy" page. | Re: New small-form factor Tablet afoot It is listed as Vision V800Xpt-2 or just do a search for V800XPT on the newegg site. The price has dropped to $989. | Re: New small-form factor Tablet afoot I see it now. It even includes the 6 hour battery instead of the 3 hour battery listed as the standard configuration on the Advueu site. The Advueu folks had better make their products easier to find if they want a lot of people to buy them. Having this much difficulty after following the "Where to buy" link on a Web site is not exactly state of the art. Extra RAM makes a vast difference to performance in Windows, no matter if it's a Tablet or desktop. I'd never go for less than 512Mb, and if you can upgrade to 1Gb you'll see much better performance. |

I don't see much performance difference between 515 MB and 1 GB, but I don't do multimedia. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP, IE/OE Please respond in Newsgroup only. I must admit that although the jump from 256-512 produces a good performance gain for general work, any performance gains from upgrading over 512 seem to be marginal. I do some multimedia, but not that much large stuff. -- Woody http://www.alienrat.com/games |

| Re: New small-form factor Tablet afoot This article: http://www.microsoft-watch.com/artic...1785648,00.asp speculates that Motion Computing may step up to the plate: "One source suggested that Motion Computing, one of Microsoft's Tablet OEM partners, would be the most likely candidate to build such a machine, as it has done some mini-Tablet prototypes of its own". James Kendrick and I have been arguing for this form factor for mobile people such as doctors: http://jkontherun.blogs.com/jkonther...tapped_ta.html www.segal.org/tablet/ It would be nice if years of trying to tempt key people worked and led to a successful product.
