| Re: Tablet Input Panel missing for logon Good suggestion, but no success. I tries every combo I could think of: 1) Created new acct with/without password 2) Changed acct for password and no password 3) Deleted all accounts except administrator and tries password and no password Did 1, 2, and 3 above by logoff/logon, switch users, O/S restart, and cold shutdown and turn on. Nothing worked. I strongly believe I zapped a needed registry setting, but don't know what it was, since it had worked properly before. Perhaps, a setting in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run ??? Tsank for your helps. This is a strange one. | Re: Tablet Input Panel missing for logon The Registry key is found in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\TabletTip\Lo ginKeyboard, in the folder under that which is very long number. The data value there (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\TabletTip\L oginKeyboard\{VeryLongNumber} should be: "SoftKeyboard.ini|KbcResources.dll|2752|17490|Logi n" - without the quotes. | Re: Tablet Input Panel missing for logon I bounced the machine after commenting the (apparently correct) string out, then bounced it again after editing back to the original (apparently good) form in the registry. Still no success. Assuming that registry entry invokes the kbcresources.dll (which I verified is on the machine in the Ink dir), could there be a problem in the line referenced SoftKeyboard.ini file? I didn't see anything in that .ini file which jumps out at me for pop-up of the kbd at login time. What else needs to be in place to get the login kibd to pop-up? | Re: Tablet Input Panel missing for logon Please don't change this line just arbitrarily. I am quoting from my Motion, which differs from what James posted. I've zipped the softkeyboard.ini file from the Motion for you to compare with your softkeyboard.ini file (the file inside the zip is a .txt file, but make sure to run your anti-virus software against it before opening). Hopefully that will lead to some change. 8-) If not, I would suggest you contact Motion's support on their toll-free number and see what they've got to say. -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol Chris H. | Re: Tablet Input Panel missing for logon Have been in contact with Motion. Have spent many hours scanning Microsoft support and knowledge DB, the www with your name (Chris) coming to the top as being most helpful on forums such as these. Also, have many years of expert and development experience in most operating systems including Windows. The background of this case is: 0) Motion 1400 Tablet worked great, including pop-up kbd at logon, until I cleaned up an about:blank trojan. 1) Let kids use the tablet one day and they contracted the about:blank trojan. 2) Installed Windows Recovery Console (WRC), deleted the problem dll, then cleaned up the registry manually. 3) Ran a few other tools like Hijack.exe to identify any other problems and removed varous registry entries. Virus scanned the machine and blessed it finally as being CLEAN without issues.. 4) Subsequently, kbd was not showing at login anymore, and not sure when it actually started occurring during my machine cleaning process. I thought I must have removed a needed registry entry. 5) Uninstalled WRC, rebooted, and problem was not fixed. 6) Upgraded machine to SP2 from SP1, rebooted and still not fixed. 7) Upgraded SP2 with various security PTFs, rebooted and still not fixed. 8) Uninstalled Motion Computing dashboard, reinstalled later version, rebooted and still not fixed. 9) Noticed "tablet s" entry was missing ... (tabtip was ok), so incorporated that in Registry and validated was checked in system startup - per Chris H. notes in other trhreads, still no success... 10) Was given a LEVEL 1 support answer to reinstall Windows from Motion Computing, and realized how pathetic their support was, so resorted to starting this thread. Can you imagine if someone told you to reinstall Solaris, UNIX, or Linux??? Would never happen. 11) Scanned entire registry and Ink directory .ini files to look for suspects with no success. 12) Have tried all suggestions and then some pertaining to this thread. So, there is the backgorund. I would have kept track of what I did had I known such an easy system remedy would have caused this issue. I also cleaned up the backup directory which prevents me from restoring the system to a previous state. Admittedly, there are steps I should have taken to do a restore in case I screwed something up - which I did! Chris, how do I get to your attachment? Anyone have a Microsoft contact to get this remedied? It has to be something simple. I'll escalate through Motion to Microsoft and will post any success. Thanks for all your time! | Re: Tablet Input Panel missing for logon The OEM, in this case Motion, is responsible for support, not Microsoft. 8-) Which is one of the reasons I'm here volunteering my time, because neither provides adequately for users. I'm going to need to spend some time digging into some things before I can figure this out. In the meantime, since you're saying you upgraded to XP SP2 in this process attempting to fix the issue, I would use uninstall in Add or Remove Programs to get back to the basic configuration (even though it was broken at that point). Or, if you have a Restore Point going back to when you did that install, use that. The problem is an upgrade with a Service Pack won't fix any existing problems, and probably will only compound them. I would also suggest, since you've apparently had problems with spyware/malware/Trojans or other parasites, that you take a look at the information here: www.aumha.org/secure.htm and try some of those free programs to further verify that your system is clean. I'm afraid that Motion's suggestion to wipe the hard drive with a fresh installation may be the best thing overall. But don't do that right away while I'm checking on things for you. -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol Chris H. | Re: Tablet Input Panel missing for logon Oh, and I forgot to answer your question. You're using the web-based newsgroup interface, and that doesn't allow attachments. You would need to use a regular news reader (like Outlook Express, which comes with Windows XP) and connect via the msnews.microsoft.com news server. By setting up a News account in OE, you would be able to access all Microsoft's newsgroups directly. There's no logon, no password and it is free. Use OE's Help if you don't know how to set up a news account, and it'll guide you through it. Once you subscribe to the microsoft.public.windows.tabletpc newsgroup, you'll be able to download all the messages. OE, as a protective security measure, doesn't allow attachments to be viewed or downloaded, but you could turn that off for a moment once you find this thread. You would just go to Tools/Options/Security tab, and then remove the check mark from "Do not allow attachments . . ." As soon as you've save the attachment, you can turn that back on. Since I posted it in .zip form, you first run your AV program against it to verify it is clean, then simply tap the *.zip file where you saved it, and use XP's built-in compressed folder mechanism to extract the text file. -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol Chris H. | Re: Tablet Input Panel missing for logon Did a comp.exe on your softkeyboard.txt and my softkeyboard.ini. Unfortunately, they match exactly. So, that rules out the culprit being the obvious registry entry and the .ini file. A) What is the process name, or service, that accepts the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\TabletTip\Lo ginKeyboard\... registry config as input to invoke the kbdresource.dll? Perhaps, that is not started, present, or is missing its own registry config to consult the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\TabletTip\Lo ginKeyboard for starting up... B) Is there a method to unistall only the TIP, and then reinstall it? C) Could I modify the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\TabletTip\Lo ginKeyboard\... config to point to XP's On Screen Keyboard (OSK.EXE)? If so, is only that one key affected? Better than nothing... D) Is there an authoritative source for Windows registry definitions? E) Would uninstalling/reinstalling the pen driver be an option? Don't you just love how intuitively maintainable the Windows O/S is? NOT... Thanks for the file Chiris. "Chris H." wrote: > Oh, and I forgot to answer your question. | Re: Tablet Input Panel missing for logon It appears that you have had various experiences with malicious software (trojans), an in the process both the trojan has modified your system, and you have made various modifications. Since you've spent so much time on this issue already, I would recommend that you backup your data, and restore your machine to a "known good configuration", either a configuration from before you contracted the trojan, or a restoration from installation media. That's the only way you're going to know that you've backed out whatever changes/corruption etc is causing the problem. Alterantively, you can gamble on spending some more time on this, but there's no gaurantee (short of calling Microsoft and spending a few bucks) that we can get this fixed. We simply don't know all the deviances from a good configuration that you machine has.
