| controlling Tablet PC from desktop KB+mouse? I have a tablet PC as well as desktop. What I would like is to prop my tablet on its stand next to my monitor, and be able to use my main desktop and mouse to control the tablet pc (sort of equivalent to a video card outputting to 2 displays). I have used winVNC before which allows one machine to control the mouse and keyboard on another machine. I understand that Remote Administration under XP can do the same thing. However, winVNC viewer opens up a window on the viewer machine which duplicates the screen on the server machine (understandable for remote administration - an admin needs to be able to see what they're doing on the remote machine- however absolutely the OPPOSITE of what I want to be able to do...). I want to be able to launch an app on my desktop pc that transfers control of the mouse and kb to the tablet pc (just as winvnc does), but that DOES NOT open another window on the desktop machine - what I want is to maximise screen estate, without duplicating visual data. A certain key combination should then allow me to terminate the remote admin client and return my mouse and kb back to my desktop as normal. It seems to me that it would be a very powerful option - not only is it similar to a 2 display output, but more flexible still, since it *is* 2 different machines, I could literally take my tablet pc and work elsewhere, or use the tablet to hand draw something I want to use on my desktop pc. I find I don't use my tablet enough because I miss the Keyboard and mouse... if I could use my desktop kb and mouse, it would be great. Does anyone know if this is possible or know of any software that could do what I want? Thanks for any input/suggestions. |

| Re: controlling Tablet PC from desktop KB+mouse? Jim, the whole problem with "remote" to or from a Tablet PC is that you lose the Tablet's best features of pen control. If you've noticed the posts in this newsgroup, the issue is there's no external recognition of pen input because there's no transfer of the digitizer to even select an object or open a program. A little difficult to explain, but the external or remote machine is totally unaware of digital input from the pen. 8-) You may want to read MVP Charlie Russel's "work-around" information here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...motedsktp.mspx as a "method," but unacceptable work-around in every-day use. For use of a Tablet PC with any monitor on your network - without a physical connection to it - you might want to look at MaxiVista here: http://www.maxivista.com/ Pretty slick little program. -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol Chris H. | Re: controlling Tablet PC from desktop KB+mouse? Chris- For me, the main reason that I have not used my tablet pc as much as I should have done is the lack of a keyboard interface. If I can do what I want, I get effectively 2 displays, a keyboard/mouse input to the tablet pc, *and* the ability to pick it off its stand and draw on it when the need arises. So I still get to use pen control as and when I need it, but get the convenience of conventional kb and mouse. Since my desktop and tablet are wirelessly connected, I see this as a very powerful combination, and if I can manage what I want, I'll be very happy :) I'll check out yours and Paul's links and see what they are. Thanks. |

This is *exactly* what I was looking for. To anyone else who has a tablet pc and a desktop pc, I strongly suggest you try this out. Despite Chris' comments that it obviates the pen writing facility, I think this only increases the tablet pc's functionality. At no extra cost, I effectively have a dual display desktop with added features (removable tablet module and pen-writing ability). Whooop! |

Longhorn might improve things, but there are no promises. "Dynamic Duo" operation simply is not on the menu, so to speak, for the current generation of tablet PC software. Thanks for the TabletPCPost link -- it looks like it will provide some of the interoperability I want. My email address is llm040903 at earthlink dot net. |

| Re: controlling Tablet PC from desktop KB+mouse? Jim, you cannot use a Tablet PC as a secondary monitor. The only way you can access it is by using Remote Desktop, and then you're going to totally lose the Tablet PC Edition functionality which makes the Tablet PC unique. -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol Chris H. Hi Jim, Glad you found what you're looking for. Can I make another suggestion? Most people use KVM boxes (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) for this type of thing. You connect your boxes to the KVM, and your input/output devices to the KVM, and the KVM has a switch for toggling between the boxes connected. This gives you the same sort of functionality, however you don't need to have the desktop powered on for you to be able to use your keyboard/mouse with the tablet. Cheers Ken |

| Re: controlling Tablet PC from desktop KB+mouse? I am beta testing the new Maxivista version 2 and it also has a software kvm included: You can switch between using the tablet as a secondary monitor or controlling it with the keyb and mouse of the desktop box. Peter |
