| Gateway M275 Screen When I turn on my Gateway M275 tablet, the WinXP screen appears, but has a picture (image) of a keyboard at the right-side (middle) on the screen. Does this appear when anyone using WinXP tablet edition turns on their tablet? Or, is it only something that is appearing on my Gateway M275? If it is, I would like to remove it so the picture of the keyboard does NOT appear. Would anyone have an answer? If it appears on everyone's WinXP tablet, I guess there is nothing I can do about it. However, if it is only appearing on a Gateway M275, I wonder how to remove it so only the WinXP screen appears (without the image of a keyboard). Thank you. |

| RE: Gateway M275 Screen Do you mean the profile log in screen? If 50, then I believe it is Tablet PC Edition. Happens on my Acer, and on my aunt's HP. That way you can enter a log in password is Tablet mode. Don't know if there is a way to turn it off. But, it isn't just your machine. | RE: Gateway M275 Screen No alice, misfut is right, it's part of the tablet edition. You cannot turn it off, as far as I know of (unless there is some registry mod that you can do). This is designed so that when you're in tablet mode, you can type in your password. This was also designed to stay because if you're on a Slate style model you have no keyboard. And if it was to be removed, there would be no way to log in without it (In the context there is a password on the profile). -James "misfut" wrote: > Do you mean the profile log in screen? I'm a newbie with the Tablet PC OS, but I also have the keyboard coming up at startup on my Averatec C3500. It took me forever to figure out I could drag it out of the way during the setup and registration process the first time I booted the PC! Now it displays below the login box and is not at all annoying to me. In fact, it is great for entering the password when in Tablet mode (mine is a convertible unit). -steve -- Stephen Boots MVP MSN.COM sboots@mvps.org |

| Re: Gateway M275 Screen As I said, ". . . some Tablets . . ." If your documentation or add-on items from Gateway doesn't include it, you don't have it. There are some pretty slick third-party systems, including fingerprint readers, which are now coming on the market in various forms. You just need to make sure there's some fallback system in case you cut your finger. 8-) -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol Chris H. | RE: Gateway M275 Screen To answer you problem. There is a reg key you'll need to edit. I DO NOT RECOMMEND DOING THIS AT ALL! But do not delete this key either, just put a ' in front of the key. The location of the key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\TabletTip\Lo ginKeyboard\ This will remove the keyboard from the login screen. Enjoy this tweak, -James "AliceZ" wrote: > When I turn on my Gateway M275 tablet, the WinXP screen appears, but has a > picture (image) of a keyboard at the right-side (middle) on the screen. | Re: Gateway M275 Screen I would strongly advise not doing this under any circumstances. If the user is not experienced, editing the Registry can lead to catastrophic system failure, and even so you have not advised of an alternative logon procedure when the user has a password set. -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol Chris H. | RE: Gateway M275 Screen And, to get it back. If you havent deleted it, remove the ' that you put infront of it. If you have, the string appears as. SoftKeyboard.ini|KbcResources.dll|2752|17490|Login Is this a secuirty hole? This runs the keyboard (a program) before windows starts? open hole. Chris, or any other MVP: If you know anything about this, is Softkeyboard.ini a "Map" of the keys? and the dll I guess is the keyboard program? -James "flibbertigibbet007" wrote: > To answer you problem. | Re: Gateway M275 Screen It's just a tweak, a good one that I took the time to look for. And in this case the Querant has a keyboard. But in anyother case, yeah, don't be stupid if you have a password on your profile, and remove the only way of inputing a password. Thats just dumb! and anyone who dose that is retarted. | Re: Gateway M275 Screen I didn't receive a notice of reply; so I didn't realize there were quite a few answers to my original question. It seems there might be some confusion as to what I am talking about. When I turn on my M275 Gateway Tablet, a black screen is first; second is a Windows XP loading screen; third is a Blue Welcome screen and that is where the 'blue' image of a keyboard appears on the right side of the screen, half-way down. It measures 5 1/2" x (about) 1". It does not appear to have any place on it to type in any words, information, etc. It just appears to be an 'icon' 'picture' 'image' of a keyboard. I telephoned Gateway and finally someone called me back and said it is part of WinXP Tablet edition and should show whenever anyone turns on their tablet with WinXP Tablet edition. Does this make sense now? "flibbertigibbet007" wrote: > It's just a tweak, a good one that I took the time to look for. > And in this case the Querant has a keyboard. | Re: Gateway M275 Screen Thank you for your kind reply. We are in our 70's and our son bought this Tablet for us. We just use it at home. #1- Would you then say that this "keyboard" that appears on the Welcome screen is a Standard part of WinXP Tablet edition? It is not something that could be slowing down the machine or causing unnecessary running programs? #2- We notice when we run the pen over it, it does move, but it is off the screen as soon as the Welcome screen goes away. Which is quite fast. Where would we get a password and how could we type it in if it (the keyboard) goes away so quickly? Or should we just forget about password, etc. - just because we use it at home? Sorry for all the questions and confusion but we just want to make sure the keyboard is there for a reason and not as an unncecesdsary add-on or decoration. Thanks again. | Re: Gateway M275 Screen You're only a few years ahead of me, young lady. 8-) Yes to #1. That is normal. As for #2, yes, it would move away since it is not needed after you are logged in as a user on the system. I would really suggest you use a password, even if it is only used at home. You never know who might want to get access to the Tablet PC, and it can eventually contain lots of information that you wouldn't want to get into someone else's hands if they got your Tablet. Alice, if you will contact me by the email address I use for posting here, I would be glad to help you privately to set up your machine so you can be safe. The address I use as a catcher for advertising from newsgroups is in the form of word@address.com but is really winxpnews at hotmail dot com. Just change the at to @ and dot to a period and make it all continuous. I automatically reject all the emails I get, but will be careful to sort your email out. If you want to learn some very good things about your new Tablet PC, look for the tutorials and follow that information. There is also some basic information on my web site in my signature line below. -- Chris H.
