I read the forums at the "buzz" pretty regularly. Quite a few of the Motion
users there have opted to use Hitachi hard drives. This is a faster drive
than what Motion supplies so there is some additional heat. No one has
mentioned any long term problems but it may void the warranty if one would
crop up.

Re: Motion Hard drive

A replacement drive in any system prior to warranty expiration will probably
automatically void it with the OEM. There's no way to prove changes weren't
somehow the cause of issues, since the Tablet PC was opened up.

Exactly, Chris. I've considered the upgrade for my tablet but that extra
heat worries me. Motion's have no internal fans for case cooling. Too easy
of a line to cross for my tastes on such a compact system.

Re: Motion Hard drive

I called my vendor and asked, when I was ready to upgrade my
V1250, and ViewSonic's response was that a HD replacement and
memory upgrade would NOT void my warranty. In both cases, the
upgrade can be performed without accessing any other sensitive
electronic components. Now, I've read that at least one vendor
will consider the warranty voided, if a user upgrades the RAM.
That was ostensibly because the keyboard had to be removed in
order to accomplish this. Can ViewSonic be so alone in this?

Re: Motion Hard drive

I've never heard of a RAM upgrade voiding a warranty, but opening the case
to replace a hard drive, yes. I would get ViewSonic's statement in writing
(and notarized) from a person who has the authority to make company policy.

Re: Motion Hard drive

Sound advice, but too late!

With the V1250, you don't open the case, any more than you do to
replace the memory. You remove one screw and slide out the
drive (if you've ever replaced the drive on a Dell Latitude or
Inspiron or a Fujitsu Point 510, you know what I mean). If
you're not envisioning something like the older IBM ThinkPads,
where you had to get into the belly of the machine, correct me.

I was planning on restoring the machine to factory conditions
before sending it in for service, anyway. Don't want my nice
extras to be misplaced, and just in case the info I got was
wrong...
