| M200 Rotation Question Hi guys, Just received my M200 back from a service centre where it needed to have a faulty motherboard replaced. Now, I have the Rotation Utility installed, and the "disable rotation utility" is unchecked, and I have configured Primary Portrait and Primary Landscape as the two displays to use in the rotation utility. However, when I convert my laptop from "normal" to "slate" mode (don't know what the exact names of the two modes are), the screen doesn't automatically re-orient. Nor does pressing the rotation button on the screen do anything. I can rotate the orientation of the display using the Symbol Commander gesture, or by using the TabletPC settings menu from the system tray. However, randomly, the screen returns from portrait to landscape mode, and back again :-( Is what I'm seeing now how it's supposed to work? Before sending the unit to the service centre, when I converted the screen from "normal" to "slate" the display would re-orient itself, and stay re-oriented unless I used a screen gesture, or returned the screen to normal mode. Should I be sending the unit back again? Thanks Cheers Ken |

| Re: M200 Rotation Question Ken, it sounds as if something is definitely amiss, but you might try this information from Toshiba's support site: ===== There are two small plastic buttons near the bottom right side of the screen (viewing the M200 in 'PC mode' -- opened up, with the keyboard exposed). They are adjacent to a small silver joystick. The right-most button executes the familiar Ctrl-Alt-Del key combination, just as if those keys were pressed on the keyboard. It performs this function in both 'tablet mode' and 'PC mode'. The left-most button has two functions. A quick press-and-release of it is equivalent to tapping the Esc key on the keyboard. It performs this action in both 'tablet mode' and 'PC mode'. Additionally, when the M200 is in 'tablet mode', pressing and holding this left-most button for about two seconds effects a change of the screen orientation, based upon the position / orientation of the M200 itself. In order to use this feature correctly, you should disable the Rotation utility, and (if necessary) re-calibrate the Accelerometer utility (Toshiba ships the M200 with the Accelerometer correctly calibrated). ===== It sounds like the Accelerometer is a bit off and you may be able to adjust it. If not, telephone Toshiba support, mention your recent service center venture (including the case number), and ask them for guidance. -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol Chris H. | Re: M200 Rotation Question Chris, Thanks for the reply - something definately looks amiss, but I'm not sure what. I'd like to know, from someone with an M200, what the default behaviour is (out of the box) when you convert the tablet screen from PC mode -> Tablet Mode. Should I be able to expect the display to automatically change from landscape -> portrait mode (like it used to before the service), or was that just an aberration of some kind? Cheers Ken PS The instructions on the website that you pasted (disable rotation utility, and use the button) work, but the button doesn't change the screen back to landscape mode when you return the tablet back to PC-mode, so it's a bit painful IMHO. | Re: M200 Rotation Question The default behavior is to automatically switch, but how the display orientation changes is controlled in Control Panel/Tablet and Pen Settings/Display tab. I have mine set (there are four choices) for 1. Primary landscape, 2. Primary portrait and 3. Secondary landscape. | Re: M200 Rotation Question OK, I think I've worked out the issue. The button on the bottom part of the notebook (the bit with the keyboard) that's underneath the three silver buttons on the panel, is not being depressed sufficiently when I rotate the screen. If I rotate the screen, and then push down on that corner, the screen rotates. Since this occured during the service repair, I think I'll be taking it back to them for some kind of adjustment so that the screen's a little closer to the base of the notebook... | Re: M200 Rotation Question Sorry about the discovery, but a good thing you found it, Ken. I'm sure they'll make it good for you. When you call them, ask if there's an authorized repair facility near you. I live way away from a big city, but the tech found one within 90 minutes for me and I have been able to call that repair center to discuss various things with them over the telephone. In this case, it is a small, two-person operation and they are more than happy to offer suggestions to help users not have to ship their machines off. They don't recommend every opening up the case while a computer is under warranty, however. 8-) -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol Chris H. | Re: M200 Rotation Question Unfortunately, my experience with my repair centre has been less than stellar. - they mis-diagnosed an initial condition as an OS fault, rather than a hard drive fault. Being a server MVP, I think I have a good idea when Windows isn't booting up. However, after arguing with them for 30 minutes, I agreed to take the machine back and attempt to use the recovery DVD - Recovery via recovery DVD failed, so back to the centre. They agreed to replace the hard disk. However, during the first visit they had removed the disk to test in another machine. When they put it back in, they wrecked the screw that holds in the cover in place. - So, to get the hard disk out, they broke the case. But they never asked me about it, and I only found out three weeks later when I rang up asking when my laptop would be fixed. - Upon fixing the hard disk, they also discovered that the machine had a motherboard issue, so that had to be replaced as well. - 5 weeks later, my laptop is "repaired". However the back of the screen has been extensively scratched (possibly during the case breaking episode). - They forgot to attach the power cable for the video-card fan to the motherboard, so the GPU fan never came on during DVDs, games etc, resulting in errors on the screen that a cooling system problem had occured and the unit should be returned for service. I managed to discover this myself after looking under the memory cover - Seems that the screen hasn't been attached to the machine properly, as the auto-rotation doesn't work - I'm still waiting for a replacement cover to arrive for the back of the screen to replace the one that's been scratched. So, whilst I'm very impressed with Tablet PC technology, my repair centre experience has been pretty dismal. | Re: M200 Rotation Question I am talking about the M200 that I have, and the repair centre that I've already taken it to for other issues. The entire rotation question arose because: - before I took it to the repair centre, when I converted the tablet from notebook mode to tablet mode, the orientation changed automatically - after I got it back from the repair centre, it no longer does this (well, as I discovered today, it does if I press down on the corner of the screen that's above the little button when the tablet is in tablet mode). Since I only had the tablet for a few weeks before I had to send it to the repair centre, I wasn't familiar enough with how it's supposed to work, so I wasn't sure whether I needed to arrange another look at the tablet, hence my post to the group. | Re: M200 Rotation Question I am in Australia, not in the US (apologies if you already knew that). Here, repairs are outsourced to "authorised repair centres", and it seems that the quality of some of those places leaves a lot to be desired. This is clearly a hardware issue with the machine - the screen needs to be close enough to the base to depress the button. So, I have no doubt that a repair centre will fix it. The only concern I have is taking it back to the last place I went to, due to the issues that arose from the last attempted "repair". | Re: M200 Rotation Question My apologies, Ken. I forgot where you are. 8-) However, I would suggest to reopen the previous repair ticket with your main Toshiba repair number and tell them the issue, and your concerns about a quality repair from the same location since they caused the problem in the first place. I would also say the problem is likely that the little "fin" sticking up to be tripped by the screen rotation is not high enough, not that the screen needs to be lowered. On my M200, the oval portion around the "fin" is above the surface of the keyboard area, but not quite as high as the two rectangular rubber "bumpers" on the left and right on the same surface. -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol Chris H.
