| Handwriting Transferring from TIP to program Sometimes when the handwriting is transferred to Word, Outlook, Onenote, or a text box in IE it fails to appear. Sometimes it will appear but after a 5 second delay but only half of the handwriting. I posted this issue last fall and followed the recommendations which resulted is some relief but the problem still intermittently continues. System: Gateway M275 OS: XP SP2 - downloaded in August. RAM: 512 Graphics Controller: Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME Driver Version 6.14.10.3889 (8.20-2004) Last time I posted this issue the recommendation was to update my graphics drivers.... this initially helped but has not resolved the problem. It seems that the problem is progressive over a period of time and that rebooting resolve it temporarily. Unfortunately, the period of time is not consistent and ranges from 30 mins to 12 hours. |

| Re: Handwriting Transferring from TIP to program It could be a couple things, Rich, or a combination thereof. Which versions of Word, Outlook and OneNote are you using? Are you doing a myriad of things, i.e., having several applications open at the same time? From your timing indications, it seems to build up, so it may be related to the memory loss from the Tablet Input Panel which Microsoft is investigating and attempting to fix. You might want to try this (just a thought to kick it into gear or reset things): NOTE: If you're using any East Asian languages, this will close the language bar. Go into Control Panel/Regional and Language Options/Languages tab. Tap the Details button, then the Advanced tab. Under System Configuration, put a check mark in "Turn off advanced text services" tap Apply, then OK your way out. Restart your Tablet. Then go back in, remove the check mark and follow that with a restart of the system again. I would also verify you have the absolute latest drivers for your Tablet PC installed. If you haven't updated them since installing XP SP2, I would either update or reinstall all those available. -- Chris H. And, are you suggesting all drivers or just the one related to the TIP? |

| Re: Handwriting Transferring from TIP to program Yes, Microsoft is working on a solution to the memory leak. Keep in mind, a simple restart of the system will clear the "leak" and you can go on from there. I would say in reality you probably wouldn't see any issues unless you were leaving your system on day after day with very heavy Ink usage. I wouldn't think having a couple apps open, like Word, OneNote, Outlook, etc., even with 512 RAM it shouldn't behave like that. What I was thinking was some heavy duty number crunching programs or manipulations of very large photos which might cause slight hiccups. 8-) The drivers, if you haven't checked them since installing XP SP2 and the Tablet PC Edition 2005, I would especially install the BIOS version released 12-21-2004 if you haven't already. If you have, pass on that. But the video driver here for sure from Gateway here: http://support.gateway.com/support/d...¶m=3501734 and the Wacom pen driver 4.82-9a from here: http://www.wacom.com/tabletpc/driver.cfm . -- Chris H. | Re: Handwriting Transferring from TIP to program Rich, upgrade to at least 1.256GB (as mine M275x) of ram. 4 or more programs that are as memory intensive as MS makes them. hah. Try also fixing your windows virtual memory. Get it to at least 3x your real memory, and keep it min and max at that amount. This will stop the disk from fragmenting the virtual memory, slowing your machine. And using the life of the disk. | Re: Handwriting Transferring from TIP to program Actually, managing it to a fixed size is best. Windows managing it actually slows down the computer alot. I suggest you look into it. But to be safe, just leave it at 3 times the amount of your actual Ram. -James "Chris H." wrote: > You should leave the paging file management to Windows itself. > -- > http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx > In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol > > Chris H. > Microsoft Windows MVP/Tablet PC > Tablet Creations - http://nicecreations.us/ > Associate Expert > Expert Zone - www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone > > > "flibbertigibbet007" <flibbertigibbet007@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in > message news:69F89132-4477-44E1-B76D-9E86C0FCEAAE@microsoft.com... > > Rich, upgrade to at least 1.256GB (as mine M275x) of ram. 4 or more > > programs > > that are as memory intensive as MS makes them. hah. > > Try also fixing your windows virtual memory. | Re: Handwriting Transferring from TIP to program Incorrect, James. I wish you would stop posting that. Please refer to this article by MVP Alex Nichol who passed away Wednesday: http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm Alex does give some suggestions if you really need to play with the sizing, but for a normal user they should let the system do what it is designed to do, manage the pagefile. Each of your recommendations are fallacies as he explains. It might do you well to read and use his information. -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol Chris H. | Re: Handwriting Transferring from TIP to program I was recently told that you should kill virtual memory if you have a GB of RAM. Supposedly, the hard drive caching actually becomes more of a liability than an asset at that point. IIRC, that tidbit came from the instructor of the MS 2272 (Implementing/Supporting XP) class I took last month. Sheesh! Who is right? It doesn't really matter to me right now, since I'm maxed out at 768, and it doesn't effect the OP, unless he upgrades, but it would be nice to know. -- TCPW The Miniature Mage "flibbertigibbet007" <flibbertigibbet007@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:A6B84711-CF25-44AE-BF8F-CF61660733E0@microsoft.com... > Actually, managing it to a fixed size is best. | Re: Handwriting Transferring from TIP to program Actually chris, I'm not wrong, I have done studies on my own. And found exactly what I have stated. The page file gets fragmented across the drive if its not set at a constant value. By the way the link is broken, so I can't read the article. I suggest you try a constant value on your own computers, you'll actually see how much less the disk is being asccessed. Disabling entirely, is a bad idea, I understand that. Of course, I recomend setting the value after you've ran defrag, and you do all this in safe mode. IT ALL GOES BACK TO THE FACT THAT LINUX SETS A SEPERATE PARTITION FOR THE SWAP!!! Its all the same idea, just the pagefile for windows is a FILE that can be fragmented, and a partition is a set value on your disk that won't change. And the only way you can recreate that is by forcing a set value to the windows pagefile. -James "Chris H." wrote: > A lot of the recommendations regarding the pagefile are based on old Win9x > assumptions when it dealt with the swapfile. | Re: Handwriting Transferring from TIP to program Chris, it's stated in that fine article, that it's not necessary on a single user machine to set the page file like the way i describe. But either way it won't do any harm. I am talking from experience, and Alex was talking just about basic needs. No a basic computer, home user, doesnt need a huge page file 3x the ram, no it wont have any problems being fragmented on the disk. But it's still good for you, especially if you're going to be a "power user" (in that term I mean using the computer to where the fan is set on the highest speed all the time). Setting the pagefile size will speed memory use. If alex were alive today, i'd challenge him on that fact. But he is talking on the fact that it's for a basic computer user, home user who checks email, and buys stuff on ebay, and sometimes plays solitare! But if you're going to be accessing large quantities of data across a network, and using large number crunching programs. Setting Virtual Memory as I've stated is probably better than NOT! -James "Chris H." wrote: > That's fine. > > The link is: > http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm > > I see one of the problems, though, with the link and that is you're using > the web-based newsgroups instead of a real newsreader. 8-) You know you > can subscribe to any or all of the Microsoft newsgroups by setting up a news > reader (like Outlook Express) for the msnews.microsoft.com news server. > Free, no logon, no password, and anyone around the world can use it. > -- > http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...ts/nichol.mspx > In memory of a true friend, Windows MVP Alex Nichol > > Chris H. > Microsoft Windows MVP/Tablet PC > Tablet Creations - http://nicecreations.us/ > Associate Expert > Expert Zone - www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone > > > "flibbertigibbet007" <flibbertigibbet007@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in > message news:AFC401CE-E066-422B-A26E-50AE680C392E@microsoft.com... > > Actually chris, I'm not wrong, I have done studies on my own.
