| Sun Java vs Microsoft Our tablet has Sun Java and we wonder if it would be a "great" problem to use (or install) Microsoft Java instead. Would anyone know the answer? If we could get rid of the Sun Java and replace it with Microsoft Java, how would we do that? We are not too computer savvy. Thanks for any help. |

| Re: Sun Java vs Microsoft You don't any more, Alice. A court decision left Sun in control of the java, and you have to use their version. I would be sure to check their site early and often because they've had some security issues and are updating quite often. Check here: http://java.sun.com/ -- Chris H. | Re: Sun Java vs Microsoft I dont *have* to use anything. Anyway's isnt that a monopoly? (no not the game) Wait, isn't that illegal? All things considered JAva sucks, and is just a security problem. Hey, by the way how do I get rid of java? I don't want it anymore. -James "Chris H." wrote: > You don't any more, Alice. | Re: Sun Java vs Microsoft Uninstall from within Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs. You may have an entry like "J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 1" listed. | Re: Sun Java vs Microsoft We use the Microsoft Java VM to do all our demos because it runs much more reliably and faster for GUI operations than the Sun JVM. To install Microsoft's Java do the following: 1. Download the Microsoft VM from one of the links on the bottom of http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_9.htm. Some download sites there work, some don't. 2. Run Windows update. It will update your Java to the latest version (Release 5.0.0.3810). 3. You may need to fiddle (in Tools | Internet Options | Advanced) with the Java (Sun) and Microsoft VM options. The two disadvantages of the Microsoft JVM are: 1. It uses an older version of Java so it will not run programs using newer Java features. 2. In some situations TextFields do not summon the TIP, as detailed at www.segal.org/java/tablet_events/. If you want to keep the Sun JVM on the computer as well you can use a utility to switch between JVMs without restarting the browser: http://www.jensign.com/JavaScience/SelectIEJVM/ "AliceZ" <AliceZ@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:F9C63C46-7359-4F38-9341-6367A7165A93@microsoft.com... > Our tablet has Sun Java and we wonder if it would be a "great" problem to > use > (or install) Microsoft Java instead. | Re: Sun Java vs Microsoft In IE6 Tools / Advanced, it has following CHECKED: Java (Sun) Use Java 2v1.4.2 for (applet) (THIS IS CHECKED) Microsoft VM (all are CHECKED) Java console enabled Java logging enabled JIT compiler ======== Does that mean I have both Sun and MS Java? Is so, can I uncheck the Java (Sun)? Please advise and thank you. | Re: Sun Java vs Microsoft That means you have both the Sun and Microsoft Java VMs installed and the Sun Java VM is the one that is active. If you uncheck "Use Java 2v1.4.2" the Microsoft Java VM will take over. BTW, the current version of Sun's Java is 1.5.0_01 and you should upgrade if you can. | Re: Sun Java vs Microsoft As Mickey says, you've got the old version of Sun installed. You should upgrade (and specifically follow their instructions about uninstalling first) to the latest version. The version you have has a security flaw in it. Please do not just install the new version. Sun's system doesn't properly uninstall the previous, and you'll end up with two on your system. If you think Gateway's site was confusing, wait until you try to follow Sun's instructions. 8-) -- Chris H.
