TIP "busy" problem

Hi,

after installing AnalogDSP++ which said it'd update some system files
(OLE stuff) to the newest version, the tablet TIP suddenly behaves very
strangely: if I move the pen or even the mouse over the TIP, the cursor
flicks very fast between the "busy" cursor and the standard cursor, and
at the same time tabtip.exe eats up 90% CPU (@1600MHz). If I don't move
the cursor, the CPU is 0% and the cursor icon steady (non-"busy"). Using
the TIP still works, but it's a MAJOR annoyance with the massive CPU
load and the constantly flickering cursor icon.

In all other applications, inking is ok and works just as before, so
it's somehow just the TIP that is messed up...

What I already tried: do System Restore to two days back, prior to the
last Windows Update (e.g. before the http.sys security update). No
difference, so I undid the restore, to just before AnalogDSP++ install
(and btw, after the undo-back-to-today-state, Windows Update suggested
that the http.sys update installed two days ago wasn't installed...
errmm.. so did System Restore actuallyt work or not?). Anyway, next I
reinstalled SP2 and rebooted, no change. Reinstallet the Wacom 4.82-9
drivers, no change.

Any ideas what to do next?

(I do have a full HD image backup, but i'd like to use that only as a
last resort)

By the way, on windows start, right after login, i now always get the
Application Error that the "Generic Host Processor for Win32 Services"
crashed. The event viewer contains (as always...) dismally little
information, only that this is event ID 1004 under Application log and
"Faulting application svchost.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module
unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000." System and Security
logs are clean. It's no surprise that the Help and Security center
doesn't give any infos about this either. Any guess what's up with this?

thanks,
- Jan

Re: TIP "busy" problem

Jan, I hate to say this but the "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services"
has been recently identified as being associated with either Trojans or
worms, depending on which it is. It could be SDBOT.S, which is a Trojan, or
DINFO.D or SDBOT.D, both worms.

Yet, it can also be caused by ZoneAlarm actively blocking egress of a
program (perhaps the new Analog Visual DSP++ trying to check for updates?).

For your own sanity before you start ripping things out of the system or
trying to more closely pinpoint the problem, I would thoroughly check your
Tablet with the information available here: www.aumha.org/secure.htm to
make sure you're totally clean.

Thanks! That was a quite comprehensive site. I ran the suggested progs
there, and the tablet came out clean. F-Secure AV said the same.

I didn't want to waste time with more detailed troubleshooting so I just
backed up docs and source code and pulled an older backup image on the
HD, then installed the few new progs and XP updates, except for
Movalyzer (i don't know if that caused the TIP trouble...). Result: the
TIP works properly now. And finally, VisualDSP++ and CodeWarrior didn't
cause any trouble after installing them again. :-)

thanks,
- Jan

Re: TIP "busy" problem

Now that it works, try installing MovAlyzeR. 8-) That would determine if
it is the problem. However, before installing it, set a Restore Point so if
it goes belly up you can easily retreat.

Tried and installed it, and the TIP still works. So, at least
Neuroscript Movalyzer is not to blame ;-)

cheers,
- Jan
