Microsoft words

I have a HPPavilion with microsoft WORKS. Everyone else
has WORDS and therefore cannot open any of my mail. How
do I change to WORDS or attach a "leader" so that they
can open mail received from me

(I wrote a 390 page autobiography with pictures and put
on a CD for each of my grand-children for Christmas.
None of them can open it because of the above problem.

THANKS

Re: Microsoft words

Hi Hubert -

If your computer came with Microsoft Works installed, you can create all
kinds of documents, letters and even send those as email attachments.
However, not everyone has Works (or Word, as you've noted), but everyone can
read plain text files saved with a .txt (for text) extension.

This could be the issue with the document format in which the CD was
created. Works (6.0 and 7;0 versions) generally save to a *.wps format
which cannot be read on a computer which doesn't have either Works or Word
(to convert the format).

Both Works and Word can read the *.doc extension of files, but Word is more
robust in the things you can do for the creation of documents. I would
suggest taking a look at Microsoft's Word Viewer 2003, available for free
download, which allows people to read files created in about 12 different
formats even if they don't have the originating program on their computer.

You may be able to direct your grandchildren to download the reader so they
can view the file or files created on the Christmas CD. It is available
FREE here:

If you have further issues or questions, I would suggest posting them to the
microsoft.public.works.win newsgroup where Works is supported. This
newsgroup supports the Tablet PC computers.

By doing the obvious ;-) - buy and install some version of Microsoft
Office! :)

Or, download and install for example the free CutePDF
(http://www.cutepdf.com/), which creates a 'virtual printer' on your
system and allows 'printing' your documents into a PDF file, which
nearly anyone can open on their system.

(it's also much better practice to email documents as e.g. PDF or
PS/PostScript instead of Word .doc or .wks, because of macro viruses and
so on...)

cheers,
- Jan

You can save your files as RTF format which can be opened with any word
processor.

BTW This is not an appropriate newsgroup really. That would be a Works
newsgroup, where my guess is, this question is asked about a zillion
times per day.
