Memory checker

I have a Toshiba M200 that keeps giving me the BSOD. I cannot find any
rhyme or reason as to why this occurs and I rebuilt it many times using both
the Toshiba CD and the MSDN DVD and I still get it. The event logs seem to
give a different DLL each time this occurs so I am beginning to think it may
be the memory I have.

I know Toshiba stated there was an issue with their memory a while back but
when I ran the utility it said my memory was fine. Anyone know of a good
tool that will check this? BTW, I do not have a floppy drive (one utility I
found required that I boot from a floppy that it creates)

Re: Memory checker

Gary, have you looked in Event Viewer, both in Application and System? How
much RAM do you have on your M200? I had some issues a few months back, and
it turned out to be a hard drive going back and, of all things, a short in
the keyboard. 8-)

Re: Memory checker

I did not see any rhyme or reason in the event logs, it gave a different DLL
each time and I have 1Gig RAM (came from Toshiba that way).

How did you ever figure out it was a keyboard short?

Re: Memory checker

Keyboard short - sometimes certain keys wouldn't work when I was doing a lot
of typing. Not nice to put 500 words in, and discover no "g" appears
anywhere (among others). 8-) I was also getting a slight harmonic sound
when I would switch positions with the Tablet. At first I didn't really
hear it, and then I finally captured it with the array speakers.

Is the gig of RAM a single module, or do you have two 512s in there? If
two, try running on just one and then the other and see if it makes a
difference. (You probably already have, but . . .). I must say, Toshiba
has one of the best support sections I've ever contacted (along with Motion
Computing). They even have a online tracking of what's going on with the
machine's repair in each stage.

http://www.memtest86.com/
Or, more specifically, http://www.memtest86.com/memtest86-3.2.iso.zip
for a bootable CD image. The test is pretty thourough and even includes
CPU cache testing. With the tablet on AC, let the test run for a few
hours, and check the error counters.

To check if it's a hard drive problem, you can download
http://www.beyondlogic.org/solutions/smart/smart.htm
and place smart.exe in e.g. C:\windows or just C:\ and then from it from
the command prompt (cmd.exe). Although if this tool it can report
anything depends on your BIOS, and whether it and the HD supports
S.M.A.R.T and whether this is enabled.
