| Do tablet PCs allow use of DVD drive while in tablet mode??? I am looking to buy a tablet PC, but I need one that can read from the DVD drive while in tablet mode. It seems like some of the convertible units can only use the DVD drive when in laptop mode. Are there any tablets that can use a DVD drive in tablet mode? Better yet....do any tablet PCs have DVD-burners (dual-layer preferable) yet? |

| Re: Do tablet PCs allow use of DVD drive while in tablet mode??? I've got two convertibles and a slate here, and all will use a USB DVD setup in either mode. I'm guessing you're "tablet mode" is when the screen on a convertible is turn around and down over the keyboard. I've really never heard of an external DVD drive not working either way. -- Chris H. Chris, I was wondering if any convertibles allow the use of the built-in DVD drive while in tablet mode, rather than using a USB external drive. The whole idea is to have the comfort and ergonomics of using a tablet PC while also utilizing the built-in DVD drive. I would like to access a mapping program on DVD that I use frequently when I travel. Also, it would be nice to watch DVD movies while in tablet mode. |

I don't see why not, although I haven't used a Tablet PC with any built-in drives. 8-) Might be a good question to ask the OEMs who have put drives in their models before you purchase. -- Chris H. I checked the user manual for the Gateway M275 convertible tablet and it says you can use the modular bay DVD drive while in tablet mode. It would seem any convertible tablet with a modular bay DVD drive will be able to utilize the drive while in laptop or tablet mode operation. Yippee! |

| Re: Do tablet PCs allow use of DVD drive while in tablet mode??? I have a Fujitsu Lifebook convertable. It defaults to locking down the internal drive bay while in tablet mode but this can be overridden, either permanently with a control panel change or on a session basis through a system tray click. I'm guessing that the thinking must be that while in tablet mode, you don't want the DVD tray coming out accidently as you hold the tablet. Visio MVP Good to hear, John.....good to hear. It just seems ridiculous to not have an optical drive for a tablet PC these days. I know 802.11g allows rapid transfer of files to and from the tablet's HDD, but the large storage capacity of a DVD drive is just too useful to not integrate into a well-designed tablet PC. > Need stencils or ideas? http://www.mvps.org/visio/3rdparty.htm > Need VBA examples? http://www.mvps.org/visio/VBA.htm > Common Visio Questions http://www.mvps.org/visio/common_questions.htm > "TJM" <tjm@nospam.com> wrote in message > news:3728aaF57qmt2U1@individual.net... > >> I've got two convertibles and a slate here, and all will use a USB DVD > >> setup > >> in either mode. | Re: Do tablet PCs allow use of DVD drive while in tablet mode??? I also own an Acer. The DVD works well in both modes. And even lf you accidentally press the eject button you can just push the tray back in. no problem. Not really, there is a question of size and wieght. The wieght of the 302 is not insignificant and at times I wish I had a tablet that wieghed half as much. John... | Re: Do tablet PCs allow use of DVD drive while in tablet mode??? Tooting your own horn, Pete? What's the engineer got to do now? 8-) Some day there does need to be a break-through in batteries. I'm glad my DVD drive is external and that I'd rather not mess with it on a flight, otherwise I could run down the battery before Dances With Wolves, (director's cut at 236 minutes) was completed. 8-) -- Chris H.
