Screen Protectors which to buy

I browsed through the group and found some discussions about screen protectors.
Many say that they are not neccessary. Even though I don't have any
experience like many posters here, but I can't really believe the screen
surface won't get scratches.
My TravelMate C302 has an 'eraser' which is quite flat and you need to apply
some pressure to make it work. If there is some dust or other stuff between
the eraser head and the screen I think the screen surface will suffer.
Also I feel much more comfortable leaving my convertable with the display
side up on the table if an protector has been applied.

As far as I have found out there are two protectors available for C302.
One from WriteShield (~$60) and one from strongengineering (~$6).
Has anyone some infos/experience with these products. Are there other
products available?
Is the WriteShield that much better to pay ten times the price of the
strongengineering or is it just the addons (cloth etc.) making the price
difference?

Any comments are welcome

Jan

Re: Screen Protectors which to buy

Jan, I've never used a screen protector on any Tablet PC since they've come
out and don't have any scratches on them at all. I really tried some, and
didn't like the feel. Remember, too, you don't need to stay with the pen
which comes with your Tablet. The Cross pens, though a tad of the expensive
side, are quite good, comfortable and don't take much pressure to invoke the
"eraser" (where applicable) at all.

Re: Screen Protectors which to buy

I'd second both of those comments. I tried, I really tried, to like the
screen protectors. Finally gave it up as a lost cause. And I haven't seen any
problems on any of my screens. I _do_ periodically clean them with
"Plexus" -- a plastic cleaner designed for aircraft windscreens. And like
Chris, I very much like my Cross "pen". If I forget it, and have to use the
one included with the tablet, I'm not nearly as happy with it.

Re: Screen Protectors which to buy

The Cross Pen looks indeed very stylish. Unfortenatly it has also a very
stylish price :-(.
On the other side my "build-in" pen feels very light/cheap.
Its definitve something to think about.

Thanks for your support

I used to cut laminate plastic sheets and apply them to my
ViewSonic V1250's LCD. I stopped shortly before Thanksgiving,
partly because I wanted to wow my relatives when I visited them
(it worked, too; my mother and cousin both had TPCs before the
year was up). Unlike others, I DO have some scratches on my LCD
(or perhaps the mask; I suspect there is one on my machine). To
see the scratches, certain conditions must be met: the display
must be off, and the screen must be cleaned thoroughly.

I can't regret that I did use the laminate at one time. Months
ago, I'd set my Tablet down at a user's desk after working on her
PC, and as I was preparing to leave, she said "don't forget your
keys" and tossed them right on top of my baby. The laminate saved
her life...I mean my baby's life. She was appropriately
horrified at what she'd done, and I still haven't gotten over the
fear of setting the Precious down near a user, but I have to go
to them, and my V1250 has to come with me.

Re: Screen Protectors which to buy

I think I just spend the $6 and try the 'not so expensive' protector.
I bought an PDA in 1999 and did never regret buing the screenprotector.

Maybe after some time I will join Chris & Charlie. We'll see.
I just wanted to know whether anyone could tell me the difference between
the two different products and tell me why the WriteShield is 10 times the
price of the strongengineering.

Re: Screen Protectors which to buy

I have been a long-time user of Write shields on my Pocket PC and highly
recommend their use for both the protection and "paper" like texture for
stylus feel.

I bought a new Acer 303XMi Tablet PC and ordered a Strong protector for it.
It's nothing more than an ill-sized (1/2" too small all around) sheet of
sheet-thin plastic with thin tape for the four edges.

I immediately ordered a Writeshield to replace it. While very pricey, the
rugged protector sheet's safe adhesion and bubble-free contact, glare
reduction effect and paper texture stylus feel made it worth the cost to me.

Re: Screen Protectors which to buy

OK got my Strong Engineering Protector and wanted to share my experience.
I must admit that they have their drawbacks.
I don't want to say they are useless, but it is indeed just a plain plastic
sheet with tape on the outer borders. One thing I've noticed is that the tape
is too wide. It is about 5 mm thick and you can clearly see them. lt covers
half of the Task Bar, which is somehow annoying.
The visibility of the Screen is degraded, which l had expected. There is no
Paper-like feeling. Nor is the reflectivity lowered.
But I must admit, that feel more comfortable when scribbling on the screen.
This is move a psychological thing. I'm writing more relaxed since applying
the protector. I just write and don't need to watch whether the sleeve
buttons of my shirt scratch my panel.
the protector does its work but my next protector will be a White Shield.
Although shipping and delivery time was OK. Also the size was OK.
