They're similar as they are both note taking programs but in terms of use,
I find them to be two very different programs. Whether you need OneNote or
not is a personal choice.

Personally, I use both: Journal to collect random thoughts that are
temporary (need worksheet on hand for 1-30 days). OneNote for long term
collection and storage of various notes. I run OneNote on my desktop as
well as my tablet (there's no ink recognition on the desktop PC that's
running XP Pro).

I think it's worthwhile to give OneNote a closer look. There is a link to a
trial download available here:

Re: Journal and Onenote

In addition to what Sharon mentioned, Journal is a Tablet PC-only
application, while OneNote can be used both on a Tablet PC and a desktop or
laptop. Windows Journal was designed to show Ink on a Tablet PC and open up
the possibilities to users. OneNote is excellent for organizing notes,
using in a classroom, etc., and being able to share (with the SP1 version)
that information in open sessions with other users.

No archive function within the program but I use Windows Explorer to move
*.one files to another folder. There is a OneNote newsgroup on the MS
servers where you can learn more about the product from other users.

Re: Journal and Onenote

How can I use the onenote in a desk top? Can I read the ink notes?

Re: Journal and Onenote

Yes, OneNote can be installed (like most Office programs) on both a portable
computer as well as a desktop. The OneNote files can be switched back and
forth between the two. In fact, with OneNote SP1, you can have Shared
Sessions between the two.
