Journal software questions

We're using Journal on Gateway tablet PCs - 6 of them with more on the way if
we can get a few problems solved.

1.) When you insert a new page it is placed BEHIND the current page.
Unintuitive and confusing. If you start with a single page and add new pages
as you need them they end up in reverse order.

2.) Exporting Journal Notes as PDF turnss the yellow hi-liter into aa solid
block of color blocking the text below it - makes PDF exports worthless.

3.) With our Hitachi StarBoard software we can write any where on the screen
- on top of software, on the desktop, etc. This is important when teaching
software. The Hitachi software seems to snap a picture of the screen that can
then be written on. When you click back on the mouse icon the image is stored
and the computer becomes usable again. Is there any similar software for
TabletPCs? The Hitachi software works on the tablets but Hitachi wants $500 a
pop to use it!

Done for a reason - because if you put it in front then you would end up
with a new title page area and new creation date. Adding UI to handle
such edge cases is oen factor for bloat in software products.

If you are just writing a document, Journal automatically adds pages
after the last page simply by a page-down. Insert Page is useful when
you want to add a page *before* the last page.

Acrobat does not support this sort of transparency. Adobe have doen
nothing to make their products ink-friendly.

Re: Journal software questions

Mike answered most of your first two questions, but I might suggest if you
do a lot of PDF handling to look toward something like PDF Annotator, which
picks up where Adobe has dropped the ball. There is a trial version from
the folks at Grahl Software Design: http://www.ograhl.com/en/pdfannotator/
..

As for writing on the screen, you may want to look into the fine offerings
from OrangeGuava (honestly!) here: http://www.orangeguava.com/ They've
done some really nice stuff with extending the normal Windows shell.

Re: Journal software questions

Ok, So I'll look for the page down button. But when a prof is writing on a
Journal printed (converted) acrobat file or Power Point and a student has a
question that s/he needs to elaborate on s/he inserts a page and it goes
behind the page in Acrobat/PPT he was discussing. The lecture notes, or any
notes, that get output are confusing to the user. There may be programming
issues as a result but the end user should be a consideration here. I have a
bunch of profs going, "What the f%ck"?

It was a programming issue that becomes an end-user issue. The cost of
making the feature work for all the before/after cases would mean
another more worthwhile feature has to go. One of the many decisions you
have to make when shipping software, especially v1.0.

Since you can rearrange pages (or transfer them between different files)
using simple cut/paste, the work-around is easy.

Perhaps Marauderz's M2Screen Annotator might be useful to you.
