Shutdown Problem

During Shutdown I receive the following message "End Program WMS Idle" Even
if I choose "End now" shutdown is very slow, taking over 5 minutes. What is
WMS, why is it "idle", what can I do?

Re: Shutdown Problem

Could be several things, Doug, and only you would know what you've got
running on your system. Are you running something called CryptoEx with
Outlook in an Exchange situation? I've seen this issue reported with
CryptoEx v3. The solution is to disable the add-in for Outlook because it
is forcing a function to remain open even after Outlook is closed by the
user.

Re: Shutdown Problem

Are you running Exchange in conjunction with Outlook? This can happen with
that combination or if you haven't archived your Outlook files in a long
time. You may be bumping up against a 2 GB barrier on your .pst file
itself.

One way you could verify this is to shut down Outlook, then immediately
check with a Ctrl-Alt-Del to see if Outlook is still running, and if it is,
kill it in Windows Task Manager, turn shut down your system and see if your
get the WMS error message.

Re: Shutdown Problem

Thanks Chris, you've been a big help. I am not running Exchange at all and
messages are archived on a regular basis. But, I was running Business
Contact Manager for Outlook which I have uninstalled. I no longer get the
WMS message, but shutdown still takes over five munutes. Occasionally, but
not always, I get the "End Program" message with "IExplorer.exe" still
running. I have tried to go back to a restore point and have been unable to
do that. I have also tried to run backup in preparation to running my
recovery disk. The backup utility just locks up and sits in with a message
that it is preparing to back up. I,m about to move my most critical files
and run the recovery disk. Your thoughts? Doug

Re: Shutdown Problem

Oh boy, Doug. I don't run it here myself. You might take a look at this
URL for updates, perhaps one will fix your issues:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/re...ontact+manager
It really isn't my territory, so you would be better off stating your issues
for the Outlook MVPs to have a shot at helping you in the
microsoft.public.outlook.bcm newsgroup. I'd be interested in what they
suggest.

WMS errors are hard to diagnose but often are the result of some add-in to Outlook that is not behaving properly. There is a utility called KnockOut that sits in the system tray and with a click of the mouse will force Outlook to close completely, even if some add-in is trying to keep it open. The KnockOut icon gives visible confirmation if Outlook has in fact completely shut down or not so you always know when to use it.

It's free so I would recommend you try it and see if it will help your shut-down situation.

Internet Explorer is iexplore.exe Windows Explorer is explorer.exe
If you're getting a message about iexplorer.exe, you'll want to check that
more closely. It could be a problem with the google toolbar
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=875344)
or it could be malware
(http://www.liutilities.com/products/...ary/iexplorer/)
