| Handwriting and speech engines disabled? It seems that the English handwriting recognition engine has become disabled or uninstalled. When I hover over the Character Pad in the Tablet PC Input Panel, I get the message "The character pad is not available for the input language you have selected". Under Control Panel> Regional and Language Options> Languages> Text Language and Input Services - Details, when I attempt to click "Add" under Settings - Installed Serives, in Add Input Language, I see options for Keyboard Layout/ IME, Handwriting Recognition, Speech, More Text Services. However, I can only check the box next to Keyboard Layout/ IME. The other services are "greyed out." I recieved this tablet computer two monthes ago and it has never worked properly with regards to handwriting (and speech, but that is less of a concern) I thought, initially, that it was a problem with the version of Office that I had, but further reading on Microsoft sites indicates that handwriting and speech recognition should be native in Tablet PC 2005 (service pack 2). I installed Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 Recognizer Pack in an attempt to fix this problem. Although, according to Microsoft Documentation, English should have been one of the languages included in the Pack, when I attempted to install, that option was not there. All Windows Components are installed, "Extend support of Advanced Text Services to all programs" is checked, and "Turn off advanced text services" is not checked. Curiosly, Windows Journal recognizes the "Note Title" when I attempt to save but will not convert. In the body, when I attempt to convert, it say" The requested action cannot be completed because the required components cannot be found." Office OneNote will convert (not automatically) and I can complete Ink crosswords |

| Re: Handwriting and speech engines disabled? Have you contacted the source (from which you received the Tablet PC)? Sounds like someone installed a bad image, or tweaked the settings. Make sure you have the recovery media for the Tablet, and try reinstalling. -- Chris H. | Re: Handwriting and speech engines disabled? Thats what I feared. I have talked to the manu. (Gateway) and they send to send it back, but they are just going to do the same thing and reload the OS, I assume. I was hoping it was a matter of a file being in the wrong place or a .dll that go uninstalled or something. Is there any way to check, i.e. do you know the file names and where they should be located, or is it something in the registry? This is my last hope before a OS reinstall. |

| Re: Handwriting and speech engines disabled? Thats what I was afraid of. Gateway said to send it back, but their just going to do a reinstall as well, I would assume. I was hoping it was a file in the wrong place or with the wrong name. Any idea of the whats and wheres of the handwring and speech engines? Missing .dll? Registry edit? I was hoping for something other than an OS reinstall, so this is my last desperate plea before that step. |

| Re: Handwriting and speech engines disabled? If you have the recovery CD/DVD setup, you could try reinstalling yourself. It sounds like the media they used, if that's the original installation, was corrupt. -- Chris H. | RE: Handwriting and speech engines disabled? I had indicated in other messages that Windows Vista does not like to be upgraded. If you have upgraded from windows XP two Windows Vista you are going to have a problem. For some reason all the files do not copy over leaving some functionality in operative. If this is the case save your my document files to a remote device and then format a hard drive and reinstall Windows Vista as a new installation. I know this seems like a lot of work but it is the only way that I have gotten full functionality from Windows Vista. Good luck, Ned Tomarchio "stkeller" wrote: > It seems that the English handwriting recognition engine has become disabled > or uninstalled. > When I hover over the Character Pad in the Tablet PC Input Panel, I get the > message "The character pad is not available for the input language you have > selected".
