panasonic toughbook... tablet edition and winXP tochscreen version. qusetions etc..

Had the opportunity to play with the

Toughbook-18
Fully Rugged, Wireless Notebook PC Convertible to Tablet PC

there seem to be two versions of this computer one is the touchscreen (
normal stylus) and the other is the tablet version with the Wacom type pen,

there must be pro's and cons for either of them

has anyone else here evaluated the differences?

I am amazed with the ruggedness of this... you could smash a desk with this
and the desk would die but the laptop would keep on ticking!

One of the things is that with the normal touchscreen version, you can use
things other than the special digitizer pen, like a normal PDA screen. But
from what I recall they're not as "precise" - you don't get as fine a
determination of location of the pen, so things like graphics programs are
harder to deal with since you lose the real fine granular control. Also,
there's no pressure sensitivity.

From what I can see on their website, the touchscreen version comes with XP
Professional and panasonic's own handwriting program, NOT Microsoft's tablet
pc operating system, so all you've seen or read about the tablet PC version
of XP and the handwriting recognition wouldn't apply to this one. The
digitizer version *does* come with tablet PC and all the things it brings to
the computer.

Also, remember as you're writing, if your resting your hand on the screen,
you'll have that trying to input as well. With a dizitizer, it doesn't notice
the hand so writing is fine and your hand resting as you use the pen doesn't
do anything to the input.

The TabletPCBuzz website has a thread with a little info if you haven't seen
it:

Hope this helps some!
