Norwegian Handwriting Project

Hello
When can I expect the Norwegian Language Recognizer Pack for Microsoft
Windows XP Tablet PC 2005 Edition to be available?
In Dec. 2002, I was participating in a project called "Help Microsoft and
the new Tablet-PC understanding Norwegian language." in Bergen, Norway.
(link: http://www.microsoft.com/norge/news/view.aspx?id=2349 )

I have not seen any result of this project yet? Can someone please give me
an anwer to this matter?

best regards
Gorm

Re: Norwegian Handwriting Project

Haven't heard of the project being on the burner at all, Gorm. Perhaps it
will be coming down the line somewhere, like maybe an add-on for the Vista
operating system, but I think Microsoft is done with add-ons for Windows XP
SP2 and the Tablet PC Edition 2005.

Re: Norwegian Handwriting Project

I also heard of the project and heard rumors saying that Norwegian language
would be built into Vista. But it does not seems like it did, so I guess we
are still to few in Norway with our 4,5 Billion inhabitants for MS to make
an own recognizer pack for us...

Re: Norwegian Handwriting Project

That would be million, not billion.

As I have noted here before - making language models for languages with
small populations tends to be more expensive than for larger languages.
Resources (human and lexical) are fewer and harder to obtain, but the
language is just as hard to work on as any other language. Microsoft
doesn't, and has never done all of its language work "in house" - the number
of computational linguists required per language for all aspects of this
work is quite substantial. I don't think Norwegian is even in the top 100
languages, by population (and then split that up to Bokmal and Nynorsk). It
rises in the list of MS target languages by virtue of its economy, but
throwing money at the solution is still no guarantee of fast results.

RE: Norwegian Handwriting Project

Yes, Microsoft is definitely working on Norwegian, but the release date is
uncertain right now.

Would you like to be notified of any betas for it? I cannot promise there
will be a beta; that decision just hasn't been made yet.

Re: Norwegian Handwriting Project

I'd be interested. Of most interest would be "special character" handling.

Takk (thanks in Norwegian)

Fritz
