| Re: would like to hear the opinion of folk that have used the higher end pda's compare to tablet for text recog. One of the great features of the Tablet PC handwriting recognition is that it draws upon the user's dictionary. For our medical software we have a file of over 1000 medical terms used in the software; after importing these to the Tablet dictionary the Tablet can recognize these terms even if written with poor handwriting. Recognition of common words is almost as good. | Re: would like to hear the opinion of folk that have used the higher end pda's compare to tablet for text recog. OK you asked for an opinion, and that's what you are going to get. I think the HWR on my PPCs is as accurate as that on my Motion Tablet. I am using the third party application, Calligrapher, on my PPCs and I don't see much difference in it's ability based on which PPC I use it on, from older WM2003, to WM2003SE, from 300Mhz to 600Mhz processors. (Don't have any PPC2002 devices left, but it worked well on those too). The Tablet has SP2/2005 on it with the new TIP. That's about it on accuracy. You also have to consider the difference between writing on an 8.5 x 11 notepad to writing on a post-it note. The physical writing surface available on the PPC does cramp the authoring process a bit. I write notes to myself and enter appointments and such. I don't try to produce the next great novel. I also don't relish posting in newsgroups or on web forums with my PPC, unless I can get by with short answers (unlike this ;) ) The tablet, IMHO, is not much better. It's not an accuracy issue, it's just slow going. Maybe because I haven't handwritten anything lengthier than a Xmas card since the 70's. I'm not even a touch typist and I can get thoughts down with a keyboard 10 times as fast as handwriting, even disregarding the recognition, and correction phases. If you talk about speed of entry of things short enough to be practical on a PPC sized screen, I don't think the tablet has any speed advantage. If you get to longer stuff, the tablet wins just because I can write three lines of multiple words at a time. If your trying to decide between a tablet and a PPC format based on HWR functionality, don't. Base it on the overall requirement for the device, and the ability of it to meet that requirement. -- Sven, MS-MVP Mobile Devices "ed sharpe" <esharpe@uswest.net> wrote in message news:eowUf1t7EHA.2196@TK2MSFTNGP14.phx.gbl... > ok a few more questions! would like to hear the opinion of folk that have > used the higher end pda's with the handwriting recognition the real > handwriting not the graffiti). how does this compare to TIP on the motion > 1400 or other comparable speed tablets? compare both speed and accuracy > thanks in advance > ed sharpe > > -- > Thanks Ed Sharpe archivist for SMECC > > Please check our web site at > http://www.smecc.org > to see other engineering fields, communications and computation stuff we > buy, and by all means when in Arizona drop in and see us. > > address: > > coury house / smecc > 5802 w palmaire ave > glendale az 85301 > > > > |

| Handwriting recognition (HWR) is very good on the PPC with Calligrapher but it is quite a bit better on the Tablet OS 2005 (SP2). But the others are correct, base your decision on the device that works for you. If HWR is your primary purpose then go Tablet. If size is your main concern then maybe a VGA PPC would suit your needs. I have written two articles on my site- the first details typical work day using a Toshiba e800 VGA PPC as my only system: http://jkontherun.blogs.com/jkonther...cal_day_f.html The other is a typical work day using a small Tablet PC (Sony U): http://jkontherun.blogs.com/jkonther...cal_day_w.html read them both and maybe you will get some insight into the benefits of each of the platforms.
