Re: tablet uses wacom pen but.... is it really like a wacom drawing tablet? need graphics light small long batt life..

Yes, its just like a Wacom drawing tablet, variable pen pressure and all.
As to the dream tablet, you'll find some excellent comparison lists here:

http://thetabletpc.net/comparison-slates.htm or
http://thetabletpc.net/comparison-convertibles.htm

I own a Motion M1400 and, for me, its an excellent fit. The only thing I
can think of I'd like to add to it would be the View Anywhere screen, though
I've yet to find myself in an environment where the existing display isn't
useable.

how effective is the view anywhere screen... how much of a difference is
there?

another item I would fear is wearing the surface of the screen with the pen
if there was dust.... and if you are putting pressure on it perhaps more
ware... the 1400 was something I had been eying!'

Re: tablet uses wacom pen but.... is it really like a wacom drawing tablet? need graphics light small long batt life..

I use the ViewAnywhere M1400 almost exclusively when I'm using one of my
Tablets. The viewability is outstanding, even in bright sunlight. The best
part, though, is that the screen isn't dark when using indoors. That can
sometimes be a problem with multi-view screens.

I have no scratches at all on the screen. The only negative that I've found
is that it adds a few more ounces to the weight of the Tablet, but that's
something I happily live with to have the use of the Tablet anywhere I go.

Ed, I don't have a 1400, but have seen them. It is truly awesome.
Unfortunately, someone came along and asked for the Motion back, otherwise I
had designs on it. 8-)

As for the screens, there really isn't "dust" which gathers at all.
Remember, the majority of Tablet PCs are digital - not touch - and so your
hands are on the screen most of the time. The pens don't need a whole lot
of pressure, since the recognition is digital. There's little chance of
dust (or moss) gathering. 8-)

ok a few more questions! would like to hear the opinion of folk that have
used the higher end pda's with the handwriting recognition the real
handwriting not the graffiti). how does this compare to TIP on the motion
1400 or other comparable speed tablets? compare both speed and accuracy

I have an Ipaq 5555. In all the various input modes I've ever used with the
Ipaq, native or third party, none have satisfied me as much as the tablet
input, either the first version or the newer version in SP2.

I've been using various products that have handwriting recognition since they
first started appearing... None have worked anywhere near as well as the
tablet.

thanks all this information helps in my decision process...
we had not been very impressed with the speed of the
handwriting recognition on the PDA.

With the newest Wacom drivers you get 256 pressure levels for the pen
and eraser, i.e. the TabletPC screen works mostly like any $15 external
tablet would. You can find some details at
http://www.wacom.com/tabletpc/index.cfm
http://www.wacom.com/tabletpc/comparison.cfm

Compared to a tablet, on the TabletPC there will always be some parallax
error (mouse cursor vs pen tip and looking angle) due to the thick
protective plastic slab that's usually over actual tft/lcd screen. Plus
some additional error near the screen edges. It could be a good idea to
try out a TabletPC first and see how much it bugs you to not have the
cursor precisely beneath the pen tip...

cheers,
- Jan

Maladroit is on a distinguished road
If it were up to me, I'd completely eliminate errors due to anything but the glass parallax. The cursor would always be precisely located relative to the contact point of the pen tip.

How? Simple. And not all that much more expensive.

Place a pressure-sensitive digitizer on the tablet screen and use a less-accurate radio digitizer. The radio digitizer will track the pen as it hovers without contact, but when contact is made the pressure-sensitive digitizer will locate the exact point of pen tip contact.

This solves the drawback of pressure-sensitive digitizers: unable to track the pen unless it is in contact. It also solves the drawback of radio digitzers: unable to determine the location of the pen tip with great reliability. Accidental contact elsewhere could be filtered out since the driver would already know the location of the pen.

It's counterintuitive to look at the cursor instead of the pen tip. I know it throws me off quite a bit just while writing, since the cursor position can move quite a bit while moving the millimeter to the screen surface.

Have you calibrated your pen, Jan? My cursor point is under the pen tip
when I touch the screen. Are you drivers current? Note that I do
recalibrate, perhaps once a month - more often if I'm switching orientations
frequently.

As observed on an M205, the dot on the screen doesn't appear to be
directly under the pen (parallax error).

Have you calibrated your pen, both directions? My M200 is precisely where I
touch the tip to the screen.

Re: tablet uses wacom pen but.... is it really like a wacom drawingtablet? need graphics light small long batt life..

I calibrated in portrait mode (on an M205 at COMPUSA). I was not
touching the screen, when I touched the screen, I was close to where I
expected to be.

Here is a test to replicate what I observed. I used a WACOM Intuos 3 6x9
tablet and the M205 at COMPUSA.
Experiment: Drawing a fully enclosed square (one without spaces at the
corners). Try about 1 inch or more so that it isn't too big.

Here's the steps to follow:
1. Draw the left side (a straight line downward).

2. From the top of that line, draw the top (from left to right).

3. When the square is complete, please share your experiences.

My Experience:
Drawing the square posed a little challenge. As the Pen is lifted from
the screen to start the next stroke, the black dot representing the
cursor and the Pen nib made tracking cumbersome because I now had two
visual clues. I had to use a test stroke to determine where the start of
the next stroke began.

With a Wacom tablet, the actual Pen is absent therefore not an
obstruction; only the cursor is seen on the screen. Hence, the cursor
location is exact.

With natural paper and pen... no problem of course.

Finally, the Tablet PC experience in general was far better than the
WACOM when I attempted drawing and other stuff in general. I could make
fairly straight lines. On the WACOM, I haven't gotten good enough at it.
Magnifcation or strokes and such just throws me off.

Is this normal, or a calibration issue?
Anyone?

Cheers
