I'm a brand new owner of Averatec C3500 tablet laptop with Windows XP tablet edition. I am trying to configure the fax so I can send out press releases directly from my word processor. Windows tells me I need the Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1 CD, which was not included with my tablet. Yet it came with Windows Service Pack 1 preloaded. I checked.
So I called Averatec and they told me that I have to get SP1 from Microsoft. I called the MS toll-free line to order it and their recording seemed to say that I have to get software updates from the manufacturer. Oh, and no one was on duty. Call back on a weekday.
I went to the MS download site and SP1 is nowhere to be found. It has apparently been replaced with SP1a, yet MS says that if you already have SP1, you don't need SP1a. I do have SP1, but after downloading all updates I could find, my machine is still calling for the CD to configure my fax unit. Will SP1a do the job for me?
Since I have dial-up and don't want to tie up my machine for hours of downloading, I tried to order SP1a on CD-ROM from MS and their ordering page was 404. No one is answering their phone to order in eprson.
I checked eBay and Amazon's software section to see if anyone was selling an SP1 disk. I Googled up a storm to see if anyone else has this SP1 problem with their fax units. No such luck.
I am writing with desperation and hope that the kind people on this forum can point me in the right direction.
