Smallest TabletPC

Hi,
It's been a while since I've visited this group. I used to be a regular
but between moving and changing jobs etc. I lost the time to come visit. I
am looking for an inexpensive tablet PC that is small. i wondered if you
might be able to help me. What are some models I can check out?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Steve

Re: Smallest TabletPC

Steve, you can check the current listings on Tablet MVP Terri Stratton's web
site: http://thetabletpc.net . She's got comparison charts, etc., listed.

Re: Smallest TabletPC

Thanks Chris,
Too bad she doesn't show the screen sizes of the various models. I guess
I'll have to check each one out individually. At least this is a great list
to start from.

Re: Smallest TabletPC

I thought I remembered seeing one that had an 8.4" screen. I can't seem to
find any reference to it though.

She has the screen sizes, Steve. An example:
http://thetabletpc.net/comparison-slates.htm or
http://thetabletpc.net/comparison-convertibles.htm . An 8.4" screen, in my
opinion, would just be too small. That's like trying to write on a PPC,
where you cannot get a full sentence completed. 8-)

Re: Smallest TabletPC

It will be used for a very specific purpose only. It will be replacing a
handheld device which hasn't been working very well for my client. We are
going to use it to do a TS session. It still needs to be very small so they
don't have to lug a big old beast around. They will be checking in cars with
it and printing off a receipt to give to the customer. That's its only
purpose. Nothing more, nothing less. In fact, I may uninstall pretty much
everything else possible to only allow that function. We don't need the
people using it to dink around with anything else on it. So, the smaller
screen is actually better due to the weight. It will be a heck of a lot
bigger than the handheld screen previously used.

I found the screen sizes listed by the way. Thanks. I also found a model
that might work. It is the V800XPT by TDV Vision. I'm right now looking for
a good price.

Re: Smallest TabletPC

The Sony U750P:
http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTE...ebookComputers
is even smaller, but it uses regular Windows XP instead of XP Tablet, though
one can write on it using the ritePen software.

It is not clear whether Sony chose regular XP instead of Tablet XP because
their screen does not meet Tablet XP specs, they preferred ritePen to the
TIP for a screen this size or they preferred the backward support of ritePen
to that of Tablet XP.

Re: Smallest TabletPC

The "Tablet XP" that you're citing doesn't exist, Mickey. Tablet PCs run
Windows XP Pro as the operating system, with the Tablet PC Edition superset
on top (just like Media Center Edition computers run an MCE superset).

The real difference between a Tablet PC and one which doesn't run the Tablet
PC Edition is they probably are saving money by not using the digital
recognizers, so require the older touchscreens. Tablet PCs (with only one
exception I can think of which is dual) enable the users to put their hands
on the screen, whereas the touchscreens don't.

Re: Smallest TabletPC

Microsoft calls it "Windows XP Tablet PC Edition":
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...c/default.mspx
which is a bit of a mouthful so calling it Tablet XP (in contrast to regular
XP) seems like a reasonable shorthand.

The full system name is even better. Check out "My Computer -> Properties ->

Re: Smallest TabletPC

Semantics. 8-) As Stefan pointed out, it is Windows XP. It you go hunt
for operating system issues in Microsoft's Knowledge Base, you'll find them
under Windows XP. There's no listing for Tablet PC alone.

Re: Smallest TabletPC

The 10.4" convertible screen on the 3.08 lb. Acer C111 seems to be the
sweet spot between usability and portability for my part. Super light
and no larger than the leather legal pad I carried for decades. There
are times your just want that keyboard so a slate is not the way to go
for a general business use tablet. That said, slates are likely the only
way to go for many specifics apps like health care.

RE: Smallest TabletPC

Hi Steve,
Hope its not too late. I purchased a NEC Versa Lite a few about 2 months
ago. I see Sams Club has it for $899!
Here is what NEC claims:
Thinnest/lightest on the market
0.6" thick
2.2 lbs.
10.4" wide-angle display

http://www.necsam.com/mobilesolution...Versa/LitePad/
I have not had any issues yet. Good Luck
