| Vista Ultimate on Motion M1300 and M1400? Hi, Everyone. Will Vista Ultimate install and run, with full features and reasonable performance, on Motion M1300 and M1400 Tablet PCs with a 1 GHz CPU and 1 GB RAM? I think I read that the M1300 needs a BIOS upgrade. Any other things to look out for? -- Thanks, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Program http://mvp.support.microsoft.com |

| Re: Vista Ultimate on Motion M1300 and M1400? As far as I know, Steve, Motion's Vista support is specific only for the LE1600 and LE1600c, LS800, LE1600TS and LE1600cTS models. That isn't to say you wouldn't be able to run Vista on one of the earlier models, but I'm not sure how well it would work if new drivers and/or BIOS updates will not be forthcoming. The main issue is only the latest models (of most manufacturers, not just Motion) will not fully support Vista's "aero" or "glass" requirements. -- Chris H. | Re: Vista Ultimate on Motion M1300 and M1400? Correction: "The main issue is only the latest models (of most manufacturers, not just Motion) will fully support Vista's "aero" or "glass" requirements." In other words, previous Tablet PCs just do not have the GPU power to fully drive Vista's "aero" effects. That doesn't mean you can't run Vista without the eye candy, however. -- Chris H. After running the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvist...r/default.mspx) on a Motion LS800 I'm told "Your current video card will not support the Windows AeroT user experience.". |

| Re: Vista Ultimate on Motion M1300 and M1400? 8-) It may not, but you could still run Vista on it. Of course, perhaps Motion Computing will be coming out with a BIOS update and new video drivers for Vista. -- Chris H. | Re: Vista Ultimate on Motion M1300 and M1400? I think an LS800 would need a hardware upgrade, not just a BIOS update, to do the aero part. It is not clear whether that will be offered or people will get steered towards the next generation of computers from Motion that will support aero. It sounds like this new generation will be out later this year, and the release in the nearer term will be a healthcare-targeted tablet. I know that the M1300 and M1400 don't have enough graphics power for "glass", and, as you say, it seems that Motion doesn't support Vista on those models. I'm hoping to hear from someone who has actually tried installing Vista on them. -- Best Wishes, Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking) Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news group for everyone to see. | Re: Vista Ultimate on Motion M1300 and M1400? As I understand it, and I'm not obviously speaking for Motion, but it would take a BIOS update on both models. I don't know if they'll put the time and energy into providing current owners with a new BIOS although we should know around January 30, huh? 8-) -- Chris H. | Re: Vista Ultimate on Motion M1300 and M1400? Shouldn't the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvist...r/default.mspx) also be telling us what is needed (though not what will be provided by Motion)? | Re: Vista Ultimate on Motion M1300 and M1400? Yup, and I believe it does on a Motion M1300, with "Do not upgrade this computer to Windows Vista unless you can upgrade the system BIOS." -- Chris H. | Re: Vista Ultimate on Motion M1300 and M1400? It's far from perfect, especially with respect to OEM-provided components. | Re: Vista Ultimate on Motion M1300 and M1400? I was reading through the posts looking for BIOS hacks to get m1400's buttons working in vista, found nothing, but did find a lack of testing info in general. I just installed vista EE on my m1400. Runs GREAT. I have a 160gb 5400 rpm seagate hd and 2gb RAM installed. Honestly, i have very few problems with it. a) installed the xp sound card driver -works perfectly b) video card automatically gets insalled c) buttons do not work! (that's what i'm looking for info on here) d) dashboard utility for ls600 lets you rotate the screen instead of using one of the buttons. (actually I only use the buttons to rotate the screen once in a while so i kind of like that i don't hit one by accident. e) motion dock still works okay EXCEPT the external monitor functions. If you plug a monitor directly into the side of the tablet you can extend to external monitor just fine, it's just with the dock that it's not working. f) internal wifi adapter runs way better in vista for some reason.. Other than that, all tablet pc functions are GREAT. Has a lot of enhanced tablet options and a more enhanced, configurable "flicks" application built in. It just runs 768x1024 but I don't want it smaller than that anyway.. the colors and resolution are perfect. I see very little performance hit.. Vista Sidebar stuff runs very quickly, office 2007 runs very quickly, devices load very quickly. With less ram I'd probably not recommend it. OK, i'm back off to search for a bios option to get the buttons working out of pure geekness. |

| Re: Vista Ultimate on Motion M1300 and M1400? While you're searching for "hacks" try looking on the Motion Computing web site: http://www.motioncomputing.com/vistasupport/index.asp I know there is a BIOS update for the M1300, so there also should be one (if necessary) for the M1400. Or give their support telephone techs a call. They can guide you. -- Chris H.
